I've seen "legacy username" writen under the name of some players. I was just wondering what it means.

This relates to when forum handles were based on the account name, not the knight name. I couldn't tell you when this was around, I think it was at least before Steam release.
Any Legacy players who want to post on the forums nowadays have to select a knight to use before they can post, this is why Shoebox and Autofire and whatnot don't have "legacy username" anymore.

So, you can't keep your legacy tag?

You can't, unless you never want to post on the forums on that account again.
