Old player coming back -- issues with equipment

Hi,
Sorry if this isn't the right place, I'm not sure where else to post it. It didn't really seem to fit in any of the other categories.
Anyway, my friends and I decided to play a bit of Spiral Knights again, and we noticed that there are now ranks, and that these ranks are required to equip certain star equipment. I quit before this rank system was introduced, which seemed to be Feb 2012 according to the wiki, and I was playing in 2011. Most of my equipment is 4* with some 5* but I am on the verge of crafting more 5* with only needing a heat level or two in all the equipment to craft it. I am currently rank 2-1, so it seems that if I unequip any of my equipment or craft my new 5* equipment, I will not be able to use it due to the new rank requirement. Is there any way this can be remedied?

They supposedly grandfathered in all older players before they made the change, so that if they've equipped higher rank gear before, they no longer have restrictions for them. It's only for newer players.
The best thing you can do is to simply play the Ranked Missions. Since you already have some appropriate gear and enough experience with the game, you shouldn't have much trouble clearing the ranks to get to Vanguard (10-2). Most, if not all missions are relatively easy to clear (easier if you lower the difficulty as well, this doesn't affect your rank in any way whatsoever); you should be able to get to 4*/5* rank in under two or three days, honestly.
If you don't want to accidentally unequip your items and have it locked, you can bring your friends along; it makes the process a whole lot easier and faster.
While the rank system is fairly old, there's also some fairly new things going on (Battle Pets, new mechanics, new items, etc etc), which most of these are explained in the Ranked missions.
