Keys... pls
Looks like someone didn't take an optional side-route with a key.
I believe there are no side-routes with locked doors in the core. I'm also pretty sure I explored all the side-routes.
Perhaps there's some code that limits the number of locked doors to the number of players in the party, and it didn't remove the extra key it decided to create.

I know for sure that there are side routes with locked doors in the core. I find treasure boxes behind them with some regularity.
The level designer wouldn't put keys there for no purpose.

Kalistes is right, I've seen locked side routes before
I wouldn't be surprised if there was one time when the level generated, and there were no locked gates for the keys.
I highly doubt this was the case, but I won't deny its possibility.
^ Probably not possible. Using that logic, there could be more locked gates than there were keys. Issue would have been spotted and taken care of a long time ago.
I'll agree with what's already been said - there are locked gates that lead to boxes. This was likely the case here.
There is a specific layout that requires a key to open, and on the other side are two circular rooms both with keys in them. Potentially you got that room and one of the keys was supposed to go the other way. Only way to really know is if you got a picture saved of the large map, like this time when I got a monsterless generation.
I wouldn't be surprised if you just didn't see the other path to bring the key to however.
