After many, many runs through the abandoned Owlite Academy in pursuit of dark-colored felines, I felt the need to share some simple tips and discoveries with fellow hunters.

I do realize that you, dear reader, may already know about some of these, but others may not. I myself will not claim to know every secret in this level.

So here we go~

The vast majority of my experience is on the first depth of mission 8-1, Weight of Darkness. 9-2 Alone in the Dark is the other popular kat farming location. However AitD has shock, while WoD has poison and I’d rather be poisoned than have seizures.

A key part of finding Black Kats is remembering that they only spawn in place of a normal kat. If a normal kat wouldn’t spawn in a certain place, there is no chance of a Black Kat spawning there either. Finding Black Kats boils down to having as many normal Kats spawn as quickly as possible as less time wasted twiddling your thumbs=more time used finding Kats. There is no need to explore the box rooms, as they only rarely provide valuables and cannot spawn Kats.

Equipment
Defense overall takes a backseat on these runs, as primarily you will be running past enemies. (Remember, killing enemies needlessly almost always does nothing to help Black Kats spawn.) If you have MSI(movement speed increase) bonuses, now might be a good time to use it. Shadow defense is ideal, but really the runs can be completed with anything.

For weapons, once again take whatever you are comfortable with. However I would recommend bringing a fast-firing gun. Anything that doesn’t stop you from moving (Blitz) works just fine, but something like the Antigua line that fires 6 shots helps break through blocks quickly.

Minimap
The minimap is probably the most important part of fast runs. You can use it to see ahead into the level and plan out where you need to go. “B” is the default button to project and expand the minimap, allowing you to see much farther, and even ahead. It isn’t always good to have it covering the screen, so actively toggling it is a good idea.
Minimap example
This picture is a typical 4-way intersection in Candlestick Keep. In this case, I came from the bottom. Judging by the black box and characteristic shape, it is clear that the top path leads to the elevator. The left and right paths both lead off to what look like dead ends, and so they are likely box rooms.

If you realize the elevator is right past a locked gate with a puzzle or arena, you may not even need to solve it at all! Again, if no more Kats can spawn, there is no reason to stick around.

Missing Kitty Rooms
Many rooms have Kats that spawn under certain conditions that I have seen many players overlook.

Case 1
Probably the most missed one, this room spawns four kats if you destroy one of the howlitzers. It doesn’t matter which, and destroying more doesn’t spawn more.

Case 2
This room (differentiated from a similar one by the lack of many howlitzers) spawns two extra kats if you walk farther along the opposite side. Walk all the way around it to see exactly where the trigger is.

Case 3
This counter-clockwise room spawns 2 Kats each time a player approaches one of the blue blocks.

Case 4
The exception to the “avoid loot rooms” room. This one spawns four kats if you loot the treasure.

Not extra Kats
You can actually simply throw the fireballs at the gates blocking the candles here, and the splash will still light them

Black Kat Slaying
The Black Kats spawn Carnavons (curse zombies) and have more health, but otherwise behave exactly as any other kat. They can be easily taken down by drawing them away from their zombie horde by simply walking away while it is still focused on you. Both of its attacks as well as the zombies can cause curse on hits.

Grimalkins
Grimalkins are the ghost kats that mercilessly hunt you down. They spawn if you are outside candlelight for a few seconds, and generally one appears per party member. They can be pushed around through conventional methods (shield bumping, pulsar spam), and can be avoided easily by walking in tight circles or dashing through them. They will bite your knight’s head off through any shield, including seraphynx’s 3rd ability.

Random tips, comments
-You can quickly restart the mission by clicking on the tabs to the right of the screen, instead of stepping on the elevator to haven each time
-Fireballs splash around where they hit, so you can light candles even if enemies or gates are in front of them.
-Getting hit while holding a fireball actually can light candles if you are next to them.
-Howlitzer heads that run into Trojans explode.
-Antigua shots at point blank don't always damage blocks o.o

Thanks for taking the time out of your day to read this! I hope it helped! Comments, advice, and corrections are all appreciated.

It's also worth noting that you can Rocket Hammer dash through the Grimalkins without taking damage.

Hi Wyv, can I just add that

Hi Wyv, can I just add that there is another loot room where if you walk counter-clockwise breaking all the boxes, two Kats+Trojan/two Trojans will spawn. That room has boxes on the sides of the room and a big space in the middle.

For that room you don't have to open the boxes for the 2/3 enemies to spawn, just have to walk (any direction) next to them.
Ofc it takes like +5 secs to break them, so might as well do it for some loot. :)

Has anyone else felt that Bkack Kats spawn less frequently in Weight of Darkness than they do in Alone in the Dark?

spawn rates and mission choice

Cheshireccat's data from last year can be seen here
http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/105673
His results for spawnrates of Kats in AitD comes out to be 21.8%, with 66/303 kats per run. His results for WoD comes out to be nearly 30%, which is a little high, but is likely because he did fewer WoD runs.

\I have completed 351 runs on WoD, and found 77 Kats. Thats 21.8%, which is almost exactly the same as Cheshire's AitD results. On the other hand, it is much lower than his WoD results, which leads me to wonder if his data suffers from too few samples. If his results for BK spawn rates are so far off, his findings for the total number of regular Kats may be as well. (I haven't been collecting info on the regular kat spawns.)

Basically:
BK's are no more likely to spawn on AitD as WoD
The "2 more kats on AitD" theory is likely false. If you are willing to believe his results, then you should also be willing to believe it when he says WoD spawns BK's 30% of the time, while AitD has a 22% chance.

Yuppers!

Good on you for making this little guide. Helpful for those who don't really memorize maps and stuff.

In terms of tactics, I would also say if you don't have any slots unlocked consider curse resistance. If you have a BKC already, a good pairing I've found is radiant silvermail (for poison candlesticks, such as WoD and Purr Terror if you want to farm its first level), and divine mantle (for shock ones). This cancels out the curse vulnerability of the black kat cowl, and if you don't have that item it'll likely save you from a minute of curse anyways!

Weapon-wise, I would suggest a warmaster rocket hammer if you have one, as they are great at taking down kats of all shapes and sizes. Secondary could be an antigua line or blaster line if you're wanting to move fast.
Also, don't forget about your sprite abilities! If you have a seraphynx you'll want to use that angelic aura quite a bit, especially helpful for grabbing keys and moving fast. Maskeraith players should be using their cloak and a drakon user might want to use their barrier to engage the black kats.

Finally, memorize the layouts of the generations. You can easily tell where a key will be needed, and if you look at the minimap you can figure out which way holds loot, thus avoiding that path.

@Fangel

I forgot to mention how bad curse can be haha! Wearing Chaos makes you receive a hefty 60 seconds of curse time, which, for the sake of time, often is a death sentence.

I've just started trying out the rocket hammer myself, so I don't have much say in the matter. However it is very useful for breaking through blocks, as the dash gives you that little boost that can even make you go faster than gun-wielding teammates.

Ah, right.

There are several situational tips as well, such as if you can see a timed explosive block you can throw a vial at it (if it's in range) to set it off before you reach it. For breaking blocks fast, you'll want either a rocket hammer for its dash attack, or a cutter line to cut through them.

Rocket hammers are supreme kat killers if used correctly. The first two attacks of the hammer, repeated several times, will likely be enough to kill any kat. For black kats, if they are beginning an attack, you might think about using the final swing to flinch them, but otherwise no worries.

Kat farming is actually a great opportunity to get auto-target involved. Depending on your connection, this may be easy or hard to pull off, however with enough timing it eats through kat health. What you want to do is time it so that when a kat is dashing behind you to either bite or fire bullets at you, your dash is going back with them from the hammer attack. With auto target on, it will lock you onto the kat, landing all 4 of the dash's attacks.

Solo at depth 24, with a damage boost of "high", you can kill black kats with about 3 hammer combos.
