Subscription Server

I think it would be interesting to consider a second Spiral Knights server for players who paid a monthly subscription fee, which removed energy from the game, replacing it with other limitations as necessary. (Probably purchasing boosters and equipment slots with crowns, and giving characters 3 lives per run - things of that sort.)

This server would run on a completely separate economy, and would allow players to play Spiral Knights as a casual action game. Players would be unable to accelerate their gearing by paying more money, but they'd have the opportunity to play as much as they want.

Personally, I think such a server would be what it would take for me to get to spend money on the game.

Players could probably organize runs across servers, with some amusing restrictions. (Could subscription servers lend free players their lives to resurrect? Probably. But they couldn't tab them. They could probably open energy doors with a payment of crowns based on the energy-server's going CE rate.)

The specifics aren't terribly important, I'm just interested in discussing how people would feel about a subscription server that blows the limits of the game off, but puts you in a different economy. (You can't trade with players on the energy server.) We can probably assume that the price point will be "low enough that you can afford it".

Mixed feelings

The idea is interesting, but I'm having mixed feelings about this.
And what do you mean by "Players would be unable to accelerate their gearing by paying more money"? I apologize in advance for not catching on.

And when crafting, would everything be done with crowns? How would the crafting system work in relation to the CE market? And what can you do with your CE in this server? Is there even a point in having CE by this point?
I'd like to have these questions answered.

No CE at all!

CE wouldn't exist on the subscription server. Crafting would presumably be done entirely with crowns, possibly with more crowns. You couldn't do anything with your CE, because you wouldn't have any CE. (Paying the subscription fee gives you the privilege of not worrying about energy at all.)

It wouldn't affect the CE market, because players on it would be unable to access the CE market.

As for "players would be unable to accelerate their gearing", I mean - well, in Spiral Knights as it stands, you can get yourself equipped with strong armor and weaponry faster by paying for lots of CE and selling that CE for equipment. (Or for what you need to make new equipment.) This allows you to get yourself new gear very quickly without having to spend a lot of time playing. On a subscription server, you wouldn't be able to do this, since the market would be entirely crown-based, and you can only get crowns through running dungeons.

I don't know if I made it clear, but one important point is that the economies on the two servers would be kept completely separate - that is, players who were running on the energy model wouldn't be able to trade with those running on the subscription model.

More questions

What would happen to a player's CE should they subscribe for this server? Will it merely be disabled or lost? Will they be completely unable to go back to the regular server to spend what CE they had left? What happens when the subscription runs out?

I thank you for taking your time to answer my questions.

They'd need a new character

Given the separate economies, I think you'd need to start a new character for the new server. So it'd be disabled - if you play a character on the energy server, your energy will still be there for you to spend, but it wouldn't be present for your subscription character.

When the subscription runs out, you'd be unable to play any characters you had started on the subscription server.

Well, good luck.

So basically, I'd be unable to use anything I've gathered on my current account and am forced to start anew on the new server? That kind of stings, but it's probably for the better.

I personally would love a subscription server. With the rising prices of CE, it's harder and harder to spend the amount of time i want on it, without spending more money than I want to. I've got nothing but free time, and I hate that this game's more expensive just because I gotta fill that time up with something.

To PeterS,

I was thinking that they could make SK a downloadable title on the PS3, 3DS, and Xbox on their respective online stores. (PSN, eshop, Live(?))It could cost $10 (or the foriegn equivalent), make OOO lots of money, and would follow everything said in your post.

Downloadable S-K...

@Leafy:

...A local multiplayer version of Spiral Knights would actually be really rad. No online economy, just collecting equipment on your couch. Me and my girlfriend would have an awesome time with that. We'd totally shell out 10$!

I heard that admins keep a catalogue of things people start suggestion topics about. Maybe you should fork off a new topic?

Fantastic idea!

This has got to be my favourite MMO right now, but 10 dollars a week is just too much compared to other games. I don't want to go back to WOW, but eventually I'm gunna have to stop playing just to save money... A subscription server would solve all my problems, and probably squeeze more scrilla out of me in the long run.

Naw

Would be a lot of work for Three Rings to just have a whole different server going and re-doing all the codeing especially with them focusing on other games puzzle pirates and their new one coming out soon. On-top of that I am sure they already make a great deal of money overall as a company, so putting more resources into Sk is not needed at all.

OOO wouldn't make as much

OOO wouldn't make as much money doing this, yes it does sound like a GREAT idea but paying players are spending a lot more than say $5-10 a month with the current method because people see the $2 for 750 energy and are like... well $2 won't hurt but before they know it they've charged $2 around 10 times and regret it.

I would certainly support this though personally, I would not mind paying say $5 a month for unlimited energy, that would in fact actually make the game itself PLAYABLE which would be totally AWESOME!
