Never played this game before but it looks fun. However, I have read some worrying stuff considering pay-to-win and lack of real content being released. Can anyone give me the skinny on whether this game is worth playing if I haven't before?
Is this still a good game for newbies?
This game is absolutely free to play, and it's really fun. Thunder made a good point. You have to grind alot in the end of the game. It's the kind of game that attract's you to play it everyday. So yes, it is a good game for newbies.
Hope I helped in any way.
The idea, like any MMO, is not to rush to endgame as fast as possible. There's plenty of weapons to try out in tier 2, ones you'll be wanting to get anyway after you reach 4 or 5 star, so it can't hurt to grab them while they're still useful for the levels you play on, without needing to upgrade them first.
I won't lie, updates have been slow these last few years. Players who have been at endgame for that whole time are probably feeling it the most. I've tried to stay away from the stale meta for a long time, finding solace in the fact that there are many interesting and hidden mechanics in this game that have not been documented, and that there are plenty of people I meet on random runs who are very colorful.
The community still runs strong. Transparency of player-developer interactions not so much.
inb4 Bopp posts obligatory or giving advice.
PVP is full of people who have major egos.
EDIT: This is no different from other games, but the PVE has a MET: Wear chaos to b gud
PVP is full of people who have major egos.
Let's add to that, PVE is full of people who wears chaos.
Yes, this game is great fun for newbies, but more for PvE than PvP. I recommend it to every gamer I know, but I point out these issues:
A. The scarcity of Radiant Fire Crystals makes the later parts of the game frustrating, but Three Rings is slowly making them less scarce.
B. Equipment is not well balanced. For example, half of all armors are not really worth considering at all. But there's still lots of fun stuff to try out.
C. New content is added to the game very slowly. Don't count on this game to occupy all of your gaming hours for years and years. Depending on how interested you become, you might play for 6 or 12 months, then take a break while you wait for special events or new content.
D. The game's flaws are exacerbated in PvP: performance issues, fancy unique variants, equipment imbalance, etc. You may be happier if you ignore the PvP part of the game.
E. The player base has been declining probably, and occasionally forum posters declare the game dead. But this has been happening for four years now, and everything's still fun. So jump in.
With regards to PvP.....the only times I got warnings or bans about strong language were when I played Lockdown.
If you are new though, it is honestly pretty epic. Looked like pokemon + zelda or something combined, I was like dayum (especially in those starry slime nighttime levels....)
If you want to enjoy it more, try joining a friendly guild (Is a Vampire, Lionheart, etc.), but not a PvP one (Cytisum, The Scrub Army, etc) as those usually have the LDers. They are good guilds, but as mentioned above LD won't make you happy.
The game starts off moving you pretty quickly, and as you progress you'll hit walls and feel like you aren't making progress even when you are. If you focus on having fun in the game and progressing at your own speed, the game will be a whole lot more fun. I do recommend talking to players in-game to help you choose what kinds of weapons and gear you'll be using, as often times what seems cool now will seem drastically less cool once you realize it doesn't reach the highest level of gear in the game.
If you're someone who wants to jump in and beat the game, this won't be a good game for you. If you want to invest some time into the game, it's got a lot to do (even if it's very samey), but your goal is typically right in the line of sight. We've slowly been getting more content into the game, but the game does have infinite replay-ability to it in terms of level generation (for most levels), so you might come across something new despite having several hundreds of hours in the game.
Thanks for all the feedback. This isn't my first MMO so I realize the game will have its flaws, but I was hoping to hear it wasn't completely dead here. Guess I'm giving SK a try :)
Make sure to switch to at least advanced difficulty as soon as possible to get decent loot.
"Make sure to switch to at least advanced difficulty as soon as possible to get decent loot."
Why would that be neccessary? When I started the game, I did all the starting missions on "Elite" difficulty.
^ Those adept at top-down shooters should have no problem breezing through elite difficulty.
Thanks for the help! I just switched to elite difficulty and am not finding it really that much harder than normal, fights just seem to take slightly longer is all. Just got my first battle sprite and I'm rolling along :P I like this game quite a bit :)
Nice job new guy, keep up the good pace. Just remember not to get too side tracked by accessories and the auction. It really diggs deep into your wallet. I usually have 100k handy, now i barely have 100, just 50k. argh.
this game is fantastic for newbies. it gives the players a great deal of time to choose their style of weapons.
the problem starts when you hit 4* equipment. it's a bit of a grindwall.
in short: early game is great, end game drags.
