Implement a gun into their play-style?
I've been mostly a swordie for quite a while and I've been looking to add a gun in there.
Question is:
How do you implement a gun into a swordie play-style?

i used to main swords when i started, then i experimented a bit in lockdown and got better with them, nessecity in a dire situation will bring out your best.
I use guns for utility, most of the time. I use most weapons for utility, actually, but I digress.
Guns are good for:
-Breaking blocks/switches from a distance/quickly, or out of order (alchemer charges are nuts)
-Forcing an enemy to dodge or shield for positioning reasons
-Getting aggro from an enemy that nobody's attacked yet (otherwise they just go for the closest Knight, which leads to chaos en masse)
-Quickly flinching enemies that have low flinch tolerance (Devilites' projectile attacks, Greavers, etc.)
-Being incredibly safe (in most situations). Nothing can hit you if nothing can reach you.
and last and most obvious,
-Damage! Which changes depending on what you're using, of course. Callahan/I.Slug/W.Grave are basically stronger, less-safe Brandish charges, Blitz is Blitz, so on and so forth. Swords are strong, but there are some strong weapons in each of the other weapon types as well.
It's not a gun or a sword, but Electron Vortex is worth picking up as well.
A basic example:
Hit enemies with a gf/da 2x, which kb-s them, switch to a gun of choise to finish them off w/o having to walk next to them.
Guns are good for comboing with swords like Neometal said above- hit them, then switch and milk the extra damage. Guns are also good for playing it safe- you're much less likely to get hit using valiance than combuster.
You can also go with the more gun focused build- use your gun most of the time and then switch to your sword to deal charge attacks or whatnot.
For me the most obvious application is fighting monsters who have ranged attacks. Strong examples include turrets (gun puppies, polyps, howlitzers) but also kats and even retrodes. When they're spraying a bunch of projectiles, it's dangerous to approach them. You have more room to dodge farther away. So hit them with guns.
As others have said, once you start using guns for one task like this, you will start getting ideas about other tasks.
That said, a pure sword play style is still viable almost everywhere. Limiting yourself to one weapon type is a self-imposed constraint that can help keep the game interesting. Anyway, enjoy.
The way that I did it, was that I used my sword and gun separately whenever I felt like it. Eventually I started to realize more and more situations where I could switch to my gun to attack when I had to back away from the enemy, or situations where I could switch to my sword to attack when the enemy was vulnerable.
If you're a swordie, you know when you have to back off from an enemy, so it shouldn't be too difficult to start shooting during those intermissions.
