If you like to damage farm, this isn't for you.

If, you're like me, and enjoy having the most caps and damage on your team, maybe this might be for you. (Obviously these pics are curated and in no way a realistic portrayal of how I do in game on average, but I'd say this clip (859-836 red) with 11 caps 8k damage is not far off.)

Here's a quick and dirty Pros/Cons list of going 2* (or 3*):

Pros:

  • Cheap: it costs pennies to buy 2* armor, UVs don't matter, and you only need to heat to level 5 to get the extra pip of health
  • Better satisfaction: It's much more satisfying to win with 2* armor gear than decked out Skolver/Black Kat/UV Max stuff. You earn your kills by self-handicapping. They're like training wheels. Even if you have max ASI weapons, you're hardly "pay to win" when full Vog/Justifier gets you the same bonuses with more health and defense.
  • Getting good at 2* means you get even better when you switch to 5*
  • Learn to play defensively and get enemies to respect your space

Cons:

  • Fighting AT, low ping users is even harder
  • Guardians and Recons suddenly become a lot more threatening than Strikers
  • You'll die a lot if you play the same way you used to with 5*, which is called sucking
  • Difficult to play aggressively since the odds are against you when diving into a fight
  • Even small lag spikes or medium/high ping compromise a lot of your survivability - you will rely a lot on playing well, predicting well, and staying alive to not spend most of your time in LD respawning. Much stronger emphasis on spacing and knowing the max range of your weapons.
  • Most 2* gear also means giving up damage bonuses - which is a good thing. Less damage bonus means you need to play even better to earn your kills.
  • Can be frustrating - a flourish swing will take away about 40-50% of your health, and 3 hits is always death. You are instant killed by a single GF combo. If you find yourself getting hit by GF combos a lot, you need to play better.

People talk about which is more important: caps or damage. I say neither is the most important - collectively they paint a picture of what you did that game. You can't cap/defend caps if you run from every fight (which is why you need to fight and kill people who threaten your caps) and you hurt team score if you only damage and go out of your way to avoid caps (remember, the more players on a cap, the faster you finish capping, and the less time everyone spends overall on capping). 2* training keeps you honest about playing smarter to get more caps and more damage.

...It's also crazy fun.

Finally

Someone who actually cares about caps

and FUN

dear god it's been so long since someone actually had a different idea about FUN than everyone else in LD.

Or you can simply let your trinket slots expire and use 5* armor that don't give damage bonuses. That will save you money instead of costing you money. An extra challenge would be to use 4* weapons. The LD meta is highly offensive, so nerfing offense is more significant than nerfing defense.

I have no doubt there are many "pros" who have tried to restrain themselves to hone skills. The thing is, they are very impatient and/or arrogant and it doesn't take much to make them bring out the overpowered set.

@Deleted-Knight: true, which is something I have done except others a) won't know you're trinketless and just think you're easy to kill, b) get no glory in showing off your 2* fabulousness. Typically you'd already have trinkets enabled already (if you play lockdown) and having trinket'd 2* build lets you switch over to 5* in the middle of a match if the teams are already heavily swayed against your favor (and thus need to contribute as much as you can for the team win).

Fully heated 4* weapons are actually not that much different than 5*, and much more expensive to get a separate set of 4* weapons just for "training" than 2*. Some 4* weapons have different properties than 5* too (eg. blaster line) and using different weapons would skew you towards just having fun rather than training for your "real" lockdown set. And using weapons even lower than 4* is too much of a handicap.

My suggestion for training is a mix of self handicapping and fun (and has kept me from dropping the game altogether due to, you know, staleness)

If the purpose is to show off, then why not just damage farm?

The slight damage drop in 4* weapons can mean the difference between a lose and a win, especially since you have low hp. It would be more expensive, but it's nothing compared to the money dumped into rolling UVs. It's just a matter of do people actually want to train or do they just want to make it seem like they are more skilled by making noticeable changes to their gear.

I think it's better to not tempt yourself by making overpowered loadouts available. You can't expect to win as often when you are training. In fact, your long term win/lose ratio would measure your progress. To each their own though.

@skelly

I will always trust what skelly says; everyone please listen to what skelly has to say. However, I don't like it when skelly doesn't use skelly and uses another non-skelly armor. I think only skelly should be allowed because skelly is really spooky and will scare away all the skolvers. Also, I like skelly. I hope skelly approves of this message.

Oh and hi skelly.

@Deleted-Knight: The main idea is you have your "real" fully decked out 5* gear for when you want to go full try-hard/situation calls for it. And you use training wheels / low gear armor to self handicap to train yourself to play better for when you switch to your real gear. It is not to say your 2* gear would become your new primary go to for LD.

It is just a way to handicap yourself when playing against other people who are less skilled or less geared and not come in with a crushingly high advantage. Which is incredibly boring to put yourself in a position where you have a huge advantage.

In the end, it is just one more way to have fun. I think damage farming with top tier gear is very unrewarding (oh you hit 30k damage with your good gear/connection? hooray?) but being a useful contributor in a match (caps/damage) while self handicapping is a better sign that you are playing well and not just abusing gear status.

/me haunts Skexel.
