E.G. Mecha armor/helm becomes actual set in-game that can function as armor, take damage, resist status, provide boosts, etc.
Speculative thread, not a suggestion.
What if every armor introduced in prize boxes actually became a legitimate SK armor?
If you look at players' current armor selection, you'll notice a few patterns.. specifically, that only one of each type of armor is crafted and that armors that function to grant universal set-like boosts (i.e. chaos, black kat) are vastly preferred to ones that do not. I'd expect an influx of new armor to be either redundant (i.e. balanced with underpowered armor sets) or to introduce a large amount of power creep (i.e. balanced with black kat etc.).
Take for example the new gunner armors that were recently dumped into the game en mass. When players do use the new gunner armors, they use the oddball combinations that offer something new along with universal gun stats.. which is to say shadow + shock + low damage vs everything. This makes a lot more sense compared to getting say, shadow + ice + med damage vs undead, a combination that is covered by dread skelly defensively, black kat offensively and conflicts with armors such as deadshot/rad silvermail for the undead boost. This armor is "balanced" with all of the above, but isn't exciting or interesting and certainly not worth crafting.
If every single one had unique perks, such as *Fuse Time Reduction Med* or *reload speed increase low* I'm fairly certain that would be an amazing patch. ~Z
Asi speeds up reload speed already so those would be even more underused
I'd actually prefer not to think of this.
Looking at how Spiral Knights is structured, if every single boxed costume armor/helm would become a piece of equipment with actual stats, we would have a severe overabundant of armors, thus resulting in a high chance of these equipment overlapping in terms of statistics. The only real feasible way of handling this would be for every single costume armor line (helm and armor) getting the same exact stats, similar to how Proto armor at the very beginning of the game all have the same stats, yet different cosmetic appearances to fit a specific style the player would prefer on their character. Even if these armors came with unique stats (such as a certain weapon type focus,) as mentioned above, it would need to compete in some way with more universal armor sets (Black Kat, Chaos, etc.), assuming that it will be a 5* set, if not, then it would still fit well in the regards for cosmetic (or challenge) approaches. I would imagine there would probably be some serious balance changes so the player can get their bang for their buck if they happen to buy a box for wanting to use a said piece of equipment seriously for arcade runs (especially within deeper floors) or PvP.
Something like this would draw away the attention of an aspect that the game teaches you very early on, crafting. Crafting is a means of progression in the game, and recommended to do so to access weapons/armors that can be rather expensive to get off of the player market. It is also important to note that whenever equipment is upgraded via crafting, it has a chance of becoming stronger, sometimes with bonuses that dramatically make the equipment more effective to use (such as Charge Time Reduction on Bombs, various status resistances up on armor, and so forth.)
While I'm okay with them adding something regularly to the game, I would strongly prefer for them not change the Prize Box armors/helms to possess stats. I much like for them to remain solely for cosmetics, and just be there for the players to not only support the game, but to fill their desire for creativity. (Would be interesting if they added cosmetic skins for weaponry too!) I can imagine other free players could feel cheated if their companion had to pay less to get equipment that would've costed about twice as much off of the depot, trading, and/or the effort to get the item. However, I can imagine, much like how Supply Depot equipment, they do not have a chance of containing UVs. Bind upon acquisition could become a possibility too with this situation.
That's about all I have to say about this.
What would be cool would be them all being 3 star armors and might bring back T2 Pvp if they do they should be really op. What would be cool is an armor that is like alchemers damage very high.
Making costumes (any item equipped as a costume) proto or 1* equivalent without any bonuses would probably revive t1 pvp. Fashion Knights.
None of it would ever be used because Chaos is a thing.
