Hey, me again, and I was just wondering about any rules towards how many knights I have. I have two accounts, each with three knights, but I read somewhere that you can't have more than three knights between the two accounts when connecting to steam. If we really aren't allowed more than three, I can just delete all my knights on one account, but I didn't think there was a limit.
So I wanted to link my alt account to steam, but would that link both of my accounts if I created them both on the same computer? Because I want my main account to NOT be connected to steam. I just wanted to see how steam and spiral knights are together with my alt account since you can never disconnect the two.
My other concern is about internet data, as you may have seen in my other posts: Does spiral knights and steam use more internet data? My guess would be yes, but I'm not tech savvy enough to know for sure. I have a steam account, but I just wanted a little info about it before I connect my alt, if I can.
Thank you, and pardon all my questions, this may not be the right topic.

It is to my understanding that when you convert an account to a steam account when you already have one converted, the knights on the first account will take up any spare spaces on the steam account, although it will overwrite too if there is more than three knights total between the two accounts.

No. When on steam, you disable the "log in with steam account" checkbox, then proceed to log in with the credentials of the account you wish to convert. You'll be prompted to convert it to your steam account. You are only prompted to merge, and only when you log into Steam Spiral Knights with a non-steam account. You are free to ignore this prompt and enjoy the benefits of overlay and game tracking even without converting to steam (but to utilize steam trading you'll need to make a knight on your steam account, by unchecking "log in with steam account" and use that knight as a proxy)

Steam tends to force updates whenever you open it and there's one available. It's only like, 70MB tops though, every couple of weeks. As long as you watch the downloads section of Steam and make sure it doesn't auto-update stuff (a big pain in the butt when you have a large library of games, some of which are multi-gigabyte)
