Not sure how user pages and talk pages work. Could someone explain a bit?

Yeah
Mostly the first half.
Mostly the wiki is about the game, not its players. But each user page is about the player who owns it. You can put just about anything you want on your user page (as long as it doesn't violate rules against obscenity, copyright, etc.). Editing other users' user pages is frowned upon.
If you want to make your own user page, you can find a tutorial on the wiki by searching for...user page tutorial.
I already thought that the talk page was basically a message board for communicating with the user that owns it, but I thought there might be some things I didn't know.

non-user talk pages
Good. But in case you missed it, non-user pages also have talk pages.

Every wiki page has an associated talk page. For a typical wiki page, the talk page exists to let editors discuss the article. For a user page, the talk page is basically a message board for communicating with that user.
By the way, all of this exists in the same way on Wikipedia. So if you don't find explanations on our wiki, just go to Wikipedia and learn about the concept there.
