Most of you are aware that I have complaints about the event, but my view isn't fully negative and I have a good reason why I get frustrated. So lets talk about the good and the bad.

The Good:

This event is beautiful, creepy, immersive, fun. The sounds of the harvester echoing in the distance make you question if it is after you. The puzzles are fairly unique to SK and trying to communicate with each other is difficult and tense due to the fact that you may have scarabs of a Harvester breathing down your back when you see a key object. Token hunting brings out all sorts of creative strategies in the players and pressures them to fight off the tougher shadow monsters in sets built for a different purpose. The rewards are great, shadow and poison are great combination for combating slimes and gremlins which often bring healers. The variety if weapon choices is great too. Support, chip damage, and a solid hitter allow knights to work many playstyles.

The Bad:

The biggest problem is the amount of memory this mission consumes. In a regular clockwork floor I am around 300 - 400 MB. In the NON- apocrean plateau floors of the mission I am using 500 - 600 MB. On the Plateau itself it spikes to 900 - 1000 MB. This creates lag and with the timer on the souls, Scarabs whizzing about, Bombies instantly booming, and the Harvester itself coming after you the slightest bit of lag can leave you high and dry. Even worse when you go to replay the mission everything seems to take and additional 100 MB. By the time I reach the Plateau on my second go around I'm pushing past 1100 MB and typically am so laggy I am of no use to my team.

So, why is this so bad..... it's like having a sandvich just out of reach.

This mission is everything I love and yet I cannot enjoy it fully....

Apocrea has consistently

Apocrea has consistently caused me tofreeze every 3- 5 seconds (people say it is a memory leak).

Reasons like this are why I haven't done the mission

The Bad: You must play 24/7

The Bad:

Yeah the memory leaks are frustrating

About a month ago I had to build a new computer due to my old one causing far too many problems (windows corruption is a terrible thing), and I was planning on upgrading anyways, so I started with a fresh slate. I installed SK to my SSD, and then took some measures to make it perform better (i.e., making it run off 64bit Java 8, setting some tags to increase max RAM usage, etc.).

It makes apocrea not bad at all running, but even with all the optimizations it will eventually get super stutters and have to be relaunched.

Apocrea has a pretty massive memory leak sitting in it somewhere, and it will eventually kill your game. About as spooky as the event eh? Regardless, that is my only beef with the event. It doesn't have anything bad in it gameplay wise, but optimization wise it's pretty poor.

2009

I run Apocrea without any issues on a computer from 2009. It was a decent machine at that time, but it wasn't any monster gaming rig, and it's certainly not very good by today's standards.

To those of you having problems, my guess is that you have some issue in your Java setup. Good luck.
