If you quit a level, do you keep the heat gained, or only if you reach the elevator first?

Kneeanderthal is right. This is explained at the wiki page "Heat" --- in fact, really explicitly in the section "Applying Heat".
Vanaduke-Destroyer, you post a lot of questions that are answered by the wiki. I'm not really upset anymore about polluting the forums with useless threads --- the forums are inactive enough that it doesn't matter --- but you might enjoy getting your answer in 1 minute, as opposed to waiting 19 minutes (or 2 hours) for someone to tell you.
You only gain heat when you physically see the heat being added to your item at the end of the level. Though there can be instances where it gou go to haven too quickly you lose the heat anyways, so waiting for the next level to start loading is the best way to confirm heat receiving.
