Hi there,

A little thread for awareness on an age old AH trick that made millions for some of the early merches and still makes millions for some nowadays.
I'll use a little of bit of maths and a little bit of common sense to explain the trick and justify how it is profitable.

Of course for starters, the trick itself:
Unbind your useless yet slightly mainstream 5* item, say, something trendy like a Winter Grave.
You've spent 4k CE which roughly amounts to 360k cr, if you're smart with buying your CE.
List it on AH at 450k cr starting bid, 650k cr buyout.
Wait.
Sold!

Wait what?
So you might think at this point it's very unlikely the item will sell. It's clearly overpriced for what it is (650k cr being almost 8k CE for an item only worth at the very most 4.5k CE). The profit is good, we're looking at about +30-40%.

So how does it sell?

There's a few explanations for that. First of all, in this example, Winter Grave CANNOT be obtained from Supply Depot. Therefore eliminating any risk of there being a cheaper supply chain. You won't see anyone ever shouting about selling a vanilla Winter Grave, it just never happens.
Second, and that is true even for items available on Supply Depot, most players won't think at purchasing with Energy, simply because converting CR to CE can be tedious and just discouraging; seeing 600k cr turn into a mere 7k CE just doesn't feel right.
Third and most surprising many people don't think of Supply Depot as a place to buy weapons and armory, either because they don't have the rank that gives them access to the goods or more often simply because they don't know about it. Try and ask around, players never think of Supply Depot first to obtain their equipment.

But Hippo are you even sure it sells how do you know lolnub
I can tell it works from experience (having done it myself); besides at any time of the week you will see these items on Auction House, if this wasn't profitable or just wasn't working, there would be none.

So when you're about to sell all your 5* equipment for 4.2k CE per piece or when you're about to buy one from the Auction House, know that somewhere down or up the line, someone is getting a very solid profit.
Making your own 5* equipment will always be cheaper; if you're not finding time but still have funds, and if Supply Depot has it, buy it there! If any of these two fail, find a seller in person (in-game of course) rather than through the Auction House. Your wallet will thank you for this!

If there's any questions, ask away.

I'm fairly sure it's limited to basil-restricted recipes, but is there a complete list of 5* NOT found in the supply depot?
I'm aware that the wiki has the list of what is found in the SD, but it may be useful to have both lists.

The reason I make this distinction is that there are only a handful of items that fit the "semi-useful" and "not in SD" criteria.

Also, another note: When you buy from another player/supply depot... it is still unbound. That distinction is only relevant if you plan on re-selling the item.

I think the list is roughly

I think the list is roughly as follows:
- All and any boss items
- Shadow lair items
- Promo items (obviously)
- Gunner update items
- Uncraftable items (Darkfang shield for instance)
- Gift items (Tri guard set, Chilling Duelist and so on)

I don't think reselling comes to mind for many people; at least no for such low varianted items. It's clear that items not available in SD sell easier, but I could still sell SD items on Auction House just as easily (Brandish lines and Wolver lines especially).

paying a premium for convenience

As you mentioned, the most money-efficient way to get a 5-star item is by finding the recipes and crafting it yourself. People who buy from the Supply Depot either (A) are ignorant or (B) value their time more than their money. The latter group is willing to spend 4,500 energy to shortcut the game. It's not surprising that they'd also be willing to spend 8,000 energy to shortcut the game.

Scarlet Shield and Graviton Vortex are also Basil-only, but I doubt you're going to make profit on Scarlet Shield, and you'd be better off selling Electron Vortex than Graviton Vortex. PvP items are also not found in Hall of Heroes. So that makes the following not available to Hall of Heroes:

- Boss weapons (Pulsars, Fang of Vog, etc)
- Barbarous Thorn Shield line and Crest of Almire line
- Shadow Lair items (Snarbolax set, Mercurial Demo set, etc)
- Promo items (Teddybear Buckler, Celestial Vortex, etc)
- Event items (Black Kat Cowl, Savage Tortoise, etc)
- Gunner update items (Tundrus, Riftlocker line, etc)
- Uncraftables (Darkfang Shield, Solstice Rings, etc)
- Gifts/bundles (Red Saber, Green Ward, etc)
- Graviton Vortex line (although 3* can be obtained in two missions, oddly)
- Scarlet Shield

Missing any?

We probably should categorize

We probably should categorize Black Kat/Torto/Obsidian items as event items there as well.

I'd fit those under promo items, but yeah, for clarification that would also be in there.

Reminds of a bunch of players who converted their CE/CR into Black Kat Cowls. Too bad that market got over-saturated fast.

Quick formula for calculating

Quick formula for calculating your starting bid when selling a bound 5* item.

(30,000 + C*40) / 0.9

30,000 is the 5* vendor offer you must recoup.
C = energy price per 100.
/ 0.9 adds the 10% margin for the AH fee.

If the current energy price is 9094cr then you need to sell your item for 437,511cr to equal the profit from simply vendoring that item.
