I've just come back after an extended period of absence and started a new knight. I was wondering if there are any dates for new content to arrive and I dont mean reskins,costumes or accessories, I mean weapons, armour, enemies and dungeons. Also what the hell happened there used to be at least 6 havens chock full of players and then some now everywhere feels like a ghost town.
Any dates for a real content update?
Ah right thanks I just remembered some announcements ages back about another tier 3 boss. I've not been on since the gunner update was released so its been a while. This has been my longest break since I rage quit over OOO ruining the Radiant Sun Shards that really crushed my fun. I think I will hang around until the inevitable death of the game, maybe they will make Spiral Knights 2 after the mobile one.
I think I will hang around until the inevitable death of the game
Good. But you should know that players have been talking about the death of the game for more than four years now. So you might be hanging around for a while. Happy travels.
This game isn't going to die unless Three Rings shuts it down, which hopefully won't happen for a very, very long time. PvP makes the game have replay value, although it's pretty lacking right now. Just waiting for the update that makes PvP into something worth investing in so people have a reason to stick around forever.
The game is already "dead":
1.) The game is generally considered a grind-fest and for good reason
2.) The game uses the casino model for monetization, making for a scary and dishonest feeling when paying
3.) The game does not have enough regular updates to sustain players
4.) The game is not (or is barely) advertised
5.) The game is not spoken about by developers, and no one knows what's going on with it
6.) The majority of the long-time players are merchants, backed by only a few whales
What does it mean to be "dead" and why do I keep putting quotes around it? Only that popular gaming culture and quite probably SEGA/OOO have lost focus on Spiral Knights. If I walk into a bar, sit down and order a chocolate milk and turn to the guy next to me and in a gruff, high pitched and nerdy voice ask him what games he plays, he'll probably say something like "League" or "TF2" or "WoW", but the odds of "Spiral Knights"? Never....And without the kind of funding that comes from having a larger, healthier playerbase we're stuck with the slow set of updates we've been seeing for the last couple of years.
The players posting here tend to deny these things; as if we can't know them, or as if they aren't somewhat self evident when looking at the various statistics that are always pointed towards. This denying process is often referred to as "denial". Life support may be considered "alive", but I haven't seen any out living their life to its fullest or having a good time.

You either die in silence as a OOO cheerleader, or live long enough to see every single shred of your effort spent on this game gets wasted away.
The game is not alive, is not dead, is undead. Walks, but don't offer anything, just keep biting people.
For while, it doesn't affect me on term of gameplay. I don't reached Vanguard yet (:P).
But it's sad, the game don't appear to grow, just keep alive, like a zombie.
OOO really needs to add Hexzyle' suggestion: a plethora of enemies. New monsters can cause new needs (new weapons, mechanics, levels, etc) and you can always face them. A weapon? Well... You crafted it, played with it, upgraded it. One time you will get bored. New levels aren't enough if they not come with new monsters: different layouts, but same enemies. It will get boring fast.
It's just me or Three Rings didn't add new enemies for a long time?
Note: Warn me if i made any english error.
Whether you call the current state "dead" or not depends on your definition of "dead". This is what's called a semantic argument --- an argument about how words should be defined, rather than about any substantive issue.
Four years ago, when some players were saying that the game was dead, I said to myself, "It may be dying, but I'm going to keep enjoying it until it ends or I get bored." And I'm glad, because I've had four years of fun. That's the point of my post #3 above.
If you enjoy playing Spiral Knights, then play it. If you don't, then don't.
I'm just waiting for this game to get a little more popular so I can sell my crap for Steam stuff.
also, I got crap! Buy my crap!
Hey, merchant guy, do you have Woven Falcon Shade Armor recipe and Woven Grizzly Shade Helm recipe?
Oh don't mind me, I've been spending 2 hours trying to find one of those things and am looking for one of those one hundred merchants to sell something I'm looking for.
I'd love to think that Three Rings has Spiral Knights in its best interest. And unless they decide to kill it completely, there's not much to say about whether the team cares about it or not. Privacy policy and all.
However, having gained everything I could possibly want on selfish terms, I've made an attempt to get into more of the community of the game.
That's where the real magic is; finding several people as active as you are, joining or even making a guild, and creating a circle of comradery to add in to the whole grinding portion. It's something that I think we overlook as a whole in favor of constant new content.
Don't get me wrong, I'm waiting for content just as much. But when that's the only focus for the majority of players, we miss the point by a mile. The only common things you see in Haven anymore are people selling items, and the deepest zone discussions that pop up are about how the game is dying out.
Spiral Knights is dying because we as a community are killing it through self-centeredness. Reach out more. Strike up a conversation with that guy asking for crowns, and offer to help them through a couple missions to earn some the honest way. (Help, not tank your way through the level and leave them behind to pick up the pieces). Start conversing in Zone chat about trivial stuff; see where it leads. Little things like that may help re-ignite the spark of friendliness this game so desperately lacks.

Easier said than done when I have three people in my party who would rather lay on the ground ask for revive while I bash away at tough mobs that required four men's effort in putting them down effectively. SoL is the biggest killer I think, more than rads even.
I agree completely with the Sparks of Life being a little bit too important. Would be really cool if the "helping hand" revive system from Mist-era was reintroduced, because unlike Mist itself, reviving Knights using half your HP is a versatile mechanic. Plus it would balance out Sparks of Life by not being the only thing you can use to revive yourself/others with.
Otherwise, you're correct when you say a sense of community is easier dreamed of than acted on. However, the only way to set it in motion is to, individually, set an example of what it should look like. Social positivity is contagious.
@Umbra-Lunatis
Social positivity isn't contagious. A person can naturally close yourself to it. And the problem here is not about self-centeredness. People can say their impressions about the game, want the game to improve, etc. It's more about people don't caring about themselves. C'mon, it's a game after all. It's just a part of your life, not your total. You can get angry about the games' state, but never let it influence you internally.
It's about Bopp said: The game will die? I don't know. Can I enjoy it while it is alive? Yes. So I WILL PLAY IT ON THE WAY YOU WANT TO PLAY.
Care more about enjoying the game than trying to teach people how they can enjoy it. Eventually some people see you enjoying it and will come along and try to learn with you. Or not, but it don't matter: it's their choice.
Attention: English mistakes may have been committed.
I'm aware that it's just a game, and I agree with Bopp on enjoying it your own way. However, I do think that social positivity for a community is contagious, just as negativity has an impact as well. And no, it's not all about selfishness either; the concepts of self-gain and community go hand-in-hand in Spiral Knights.
The point I was trying to make in my original post was that we distract ourselves too much from the community portion of the game by constantly demanding new content, and in doing so we miss out on half of it. There needs to be a balance somewhere.
I do agree that the game has a lack of new playable content, however we have (technically) endless amounts of gameplay in the arcade - that's been there since day 1. The problems with the game is that the new things that are added often don't mesh well with previous ones.
For example, the mission system hurt the arcade. A rework of how missions work (personally I think they should require a fair amount of minerals to be deposited by your team in the lobby) to make us play in the arcade would be a great revival of that if the arcade redux is lackluster. Another example is sparks of life killing the "team" aspect. Instanced loot as well but honestly that's for the better, especially since battle sprites exist now, but sparks of life do kill teamwork within the party. If you have none you're hurting the party when you die, and you're the only one at fault at that point, as everyone should have several sparks of life for those moments when you truly need them.
Game is not "dying" necessarily, however it's not doing a very good job at walking forwards while many other players keep walking on. Personally I like the game and its game design - I enjoy it for what it is right now, not what it used to be/what it needs to be/etc. I'll make suggestions sure, but I also have fun doing that, and it's great to feel involved with a community.
And this is why I stay away from forums just too much these days ,I'm gonna go have pizza now
@Umbra-Lunatis
1-I don't know what you wont to say with "self-gain". I understand self-gain as achievement of a capacity of do something: be able to defeat the Vanaduke, be able of access every game's area, be able to achieve a Shadow Lair set, etc. To it, you need of crowns, energy, heat, etc.
2-People have the trend of gain autonomy, what is natural. There isn't too much participation of community on game, because you can do nearly everything alone. So playing on parties and helping others is more optional, because you don't need to play and the others don't ask help, because, as you, don't need help. So the players are atomized, because of the total autonomy.
@Fangel
I do think that the game is not dead, but it don't have his own shining and i do think that Hexyle' suggestion suits very well. Maybe the game need more. The Arcade really needs some rework. What we beat and where we travel have too much patterns. A plethora of enemies appear to be a good way to remedy it.
No, Three Rings does not announce specific update schedules before they arrive. Check out Release/all for past release notes.
We don't know how long you've been away. Various changes to the game (guild halls, missions, auction houses in guild halls, etc.) have made Haven less prominent. And the player base goes through waves. And the player base is slowly declining.
