So, I've been away from the game since shortly after the gunner update and am getting back into the swing of things, are there any major changes I should know about?

Personally I just dived back into the game under the assumption the only thing I missed was promos and events.
From what I can see, I was right.
Although you said "shortly after the gunner update", we don't know exactly when you left. And you can get a more complete view of things by just reading Release/all anyway.
