On the game's title

I've been thinking about the game lately, and I noticed something that may or may not be intentional: "Spiral Knights" is a fairly misleading title.

Why do I say this? Why does the forum's resident idiot think that the name "Spiral Knights" is misleading when we play as futuristic knights? Could he just be stupid ranting? Maybe. But let me say this.

The game is about the titular "Spiral Knights", escapees from a war with beings called the Morai, crash landing onto Cradle, a patchwork planet of seemingly other planets. They find a vast energy source within the planet's core that they believe could help them finally leave Cradle, however are forced to fight through Cradle's labyrinth-like innards to get to it. As the game grew, much more of the story was given, such as the Alpha Squad, the first squad of Knights who managed to enter the core, and the Swarm, eldritch monsters attempting to consume the core's energy.

"But you still haven't gotten into the misleading part, idiot." One, that's Mr. Idiot to you, and two, I was getting there. Because the misleading part is that there are no actual spirals in the game.

Yes. You read that right.

The name of the game and players is "Spiral Knights" and the organization they fall under is called "Spiral HQ". But are there any spirals associated with them? No. Are there spirals anywhere in the game? Aside from the eye type and Swiftstrike shield, no. You could argue that there are spirals in the form of the lifts and the spring/coil materials, but the Knights aren't affiliated with either of those.

So, OOO, why are the characters called "Spiral" Knights when they have little to no known association with spirals?

lots of spirals in the artwork

There are lots of spirals in the art work. In a wolver den, you will see spirals on the sides of unbreakable blocks. On the back of a jelly-line helmet, you will see a spiral. In the chess knight icon there is a spiral. And so on.

But you're right that spirals aren't really significant in the plot or game play.

Originally we were called Tech Knights, not Spiral Knights.

Remember, don't shoot food.

Because "Knights" probably isn't a very good name for a game.

It's just cool.

Ehh...lets just say it sounds cool.

Let's not think about it too hard.
We are robotic Knights that wield guns, giant swords and hammers, go underground and massacre everything within our sights for money, materials, and just for the hell of it.
Oh yeah. We came on a giant space ship.

By this point we aren't just simple "Knights"

dont forget

the knights are also part of the spiral order

@warpmonger there is far more evidence that knights are organic beings and not robots, check the wiki

I like Sonic Unleashed, screw you

I'm not ignoring the other responses, I just have little input on then.

@Bopp
I actually forgot about the spiral in the Chess Knight icon, but aside from that

@Vohtarak
I still want to know what the significance of the spiral is in the name and why they chose that. Is this game secretly a side-backstory for Gurren Lagann and the Knights and Morai represent one of the Spiral races and Anti-Spiral, respectively?

maybe...

because the knights spiral down through clockworks on their way to the core.

@Iamnoone - Nope

I'm pretty sure they were called Spiral Knights, the Spiral Order, and Spiral HQ long before they arrived on Cradle/the Clockworks...

If you look at the crest for the Spiral Order it is a horse whose jawline is curved up into a semi-spiral. That's enough to justify their name to me, honestly.

Who is to say that the others Orders don't have weird names? Like the Creampuff Order or the Bedhead Order?

I like the name Spiral Knights. It sounds considerably better than "Stranded Space Knights" or "Space Marines" or "Link Fused With Vivi From Final Fantasy Trying To Repair His Or Her Space Ship", even if those describe what's going on better.. I guess really it begs the question that you're asking- why the Spiral? Kind of like the question "Doctor who??" it draws interest to the series, and because it has no real answer leaves plenty of room for speculation.

@Umbra-Lunatis

Thank you. I appreciate the comic relief.
