I've been thinking about the game lately, and I noticed something that may or may not be intentional: "Spiral Knights" is a fairly misleading title.
Why do I say this? Why does the forum's resident idiot think that the name "Spiral Knights" is misleading when we play as futuristic knights? Could he just be stupid ranting? Maybe. But let me say this.
The game is about the titular "Spiral Knights", escapees from a war with beings called the Morai, crash landing onto Cradle, a patchwork planet of seemingly other planets. They find a vast energy source within the planet's core that they believe could help them finally leave Cradle, however are forced to fight through Cradle's labyrinth-like innards to get to it. As the game grew, much more of the story was given, such as the Alpha Squad, the first squad of Knights who managed to enter the core, and the Swarm, eldritch monsters attempting to consume the core's energy.
"But you still haven't gotten into the misleading part, idiot." One, that's Mr. Idiot to you, and two, I was getting there. Because the misleading part is that there are no actual spirals in the game.
Yes. You read that right.
The name of the game and players is "Spiral Knights" and the organization they fall under is called "Spiral HQ". But are there any spirals associated with them? No. Are there spirals anywhere in the game? Aside from the eye type and Swiftstrike shield, no. You could argue that there are spirals in the form of the lifts and the spring/coil materials, but the Knights aren't affiliated with either of those.
So, OOO, why are the characters called "Spiral" Knights when they have little to no known association with spirals?
tl;dr
The spiral appears a lot on the original art assets, look closer and you will find them.
