Why is it so popular?
I find it kinda useless.. or as usefull as any other shield.
Becouse, when up against anything but elemental or normal, the shield breaks in a few attacks..

But the Big Wolvers are the worst, there three bite attack goes takes it down from full to broken, and lands some damage on the knight!

So.. now Im gonna make equipment for each kind of Stratum.. and I wont let myself be directed by the community towards some speciell kind of equipment.. Like I was for the Owlite.. So there!

Its because many see it as

Its because many see it as the best shield for FSC. Thats why it's so popular.

Even with the recent update,

Even with the recent update, elemental is still the greatest problem to me. Curse those T3 rocket puppies and red rovers... And I really don't want my shield to break around fire and shock, so the status defense helps too. (If your shield doesn't protect against a status, it does extra damage to the shield when you block an attack that has that status.) So I like my grey owlite shield.

Zombies are slow and really

Zombies are slow and really only a threat if you get cornered. Granted, that can happen there if you're not careful...

OP, the bottom line is if you don't think it suits your gameplay style, then don't use it. Sure, some folks are lemmings (there was a guy in town putting down everything people were talking about, except his amazing gear, which you can guess what he was wearing*), but the owlite series is a good choice for many. I have an owlite, but I main the swiftstrike, however I can only do that half the time in T3, depending on stratum. If you don't get hit, you don't need a shield with tons of HP or defense. :D

If your weak spot is alpha wolvers, then either a) learn to dodge and/or b) get the Bristling Buckler line from snarbolax and get a sword damage bonus while you're at it. Those wolvers won't be biting your shield down to 0 anymore.

* he was wearing Vog Cub gear, with a DA, GF, Peacemaker, grey owlite shield. He also told people that Vanaduke was basically impossible with anything but DA because HE failed trying with his Leviathan, hahaha. Learn to play.

Uh

It's a shield with shock and fire resist, plus elemental and normal.
What else could you ever want? This is not like vog set which actually sucks.
Shadow and piercing were almost non existent until the previous patch.

I'm not trying to convince

I'm not trying to convince you otherwise, but why do you say the vog set sucks? I like attack speed increases, and I actually consider the vog and skolver sets both OP compared to other armor, if you try to assign the stats points (not even talking about FSC). I don't want the cap though, so maybe you mean it sucks as a set? In general, since there are no set bonuses as many other games have, I actually like to diversify by mixing armor. Few people are aware that even a low UV in a defense category you don't have is way better than a high UV in a defense you already have. the higher the UV, the more diminishing returns, especially if it's additive, and low/medium is great if you have none of it.

Summary of why I consider a vog coat or cap best to me: Normal defense, you need this even in T3, and some stuff like fire does only normal damage. Elemental defense: all bullets are elemental, and a stray bullet can hurt. ASI/IAS: I prefer faster attacks over more damage. Faster shielding, faster shield canceling, faster takedowns. Fire resist (A UV that has MAX is the same I believe).

Don't take this as me telling you how to play or what to wear. Just wondering why you think vog cub gear sucks. You could have good reasons, but I know quite a few people are also contrary for the sake of being contrary. "Oh vog is popular? Then I don't like vog." There are lemmings on both sides and I don't prefer either.

Owlite was everything

It's popular because pre-piercing-patch it was all you needed. Anything that dealt piercing/shadow at the time was easily avoidable. Wolvers, devilites and such dealt normal damage. The Owlite was perfectly capable of handling everything, plus the two most annoying statuses.

With crafting costs and energy prices as they are (and no unbinding of equipment yet) I can imagine that the majority of the player base hasn't been able to respond to the recent changes in monster damage. And even so some people might prefer changing their armor/helm instead of their shield. It all depends on your playstyle.

Owlite and others

different shield serves diff purpose in the game. owlite is popular cause of van runs. Of cause there are times where owlite is be less useful than other shield. That's why this game keep reminding us to dress for success. Rem , there are no BEST shield that can do everything well. It's makes the game more fun and interesting. I own an grey owlite . And what I am saying is neutral point of view . If you don't really like owlite and what's the best shield for van run? Crest of aldmire.

Owlite looks really cool for

Owlite looks really cool for some people, and it's got fire & shock status def, two of the most annoying status you can get... Doesn't mean the shield is unbreakable... all shields can break

The Dread Skelly Shield is shadow defense, but poison and freeze status, which is useful sometimes, but these status won't damage you...

I don't remember the last

I don't remember the last time where anything that didn't do elemental damage broke my shield without me doing something very stupid to give it the time. Also, I hate fire & shock most. I'd rather get hit by any other robo-ray or puppy-ball.

( Alpha wolves might be an exception here now, but mostly only if another knight is enjoying his gun so mucht he won't let that wolf go in a straight line for 2 seconds )

I'm currently leveling

I'm currently leveling through the Owlite shield series to try and offset some of my armor weaknesses - I'm using Seraphic Mail, which is nice except when I get within five feet of a flame source I go up like a candle soaked in gasoline. The flame resistance of the Owlites will hopefully help reduce that somewhat as I get to the four-star and higher levels. I switched from the Defender series of shields; this lost me some piercing protection, but I'm using the Cobalt series helm which offers good piercing protection.

Mix-and-match armor is fun!

Gun Puppies.

The one time in this game you -need- to sit still and shield and soak damage is gun/flame/rocket puppies - not always, but sometimes they are placed such that you really can't both dodge them and hurt them. And once you have your grey owlite and -can- sit and shrug off a flame-puppy barrage, you can be nice to your party and get the flame puppy to point -away- from them instead of running around like a madman and making it shoot in some random direction before you hack it.

Alpha wolvers and zombies I just try to dodge. Devilites I shield against and that is a weakness now that they do shadow... (but fortunately my shield doesn't take much damage from them 'cause they just cheat and hit me instead of the shield... yay?)

mmhmm

I expect the Crest of Almire to be a pretty nice add against Fiends, particularly devilites. My Blackened Crest already tanks demonic office supplies like a champ. =P

Basically, it comes down to the fact that the majority of painful, ranged attacks are elemental, and the two most dangerous status ailments are shock and fire. Hmm, you say there is a shield with Fire/Shock defense, Elemental and Normal defense that goes up to 5*? Little surprise that Grey Owlite is popular. Though I do like that the new patch is already starting to diversify things.
