Do they really drop more often/only in Deconstruction Zones, or do they drop just as often everywhere else?
Yes, I'm going to farm for one. And yes, I know how rare they are, but you'll never succeed if you never try...

oh here we go
If you want to farm for one go for it, but the likelihood of one dropping for you with lessened item drops and being unsure about the new item drop system (no darkfangs have dropped since item drops were re-introduced, at least that are known) is pretty much none.
So good luck farming, but it would likely be easier to farm for crowns then attempt to buy the shield off someone than actively seek one out.

All signs point towards darkfang dropping in all gremlin areas (one has been found in an arena) and plausibly fire areas at one point. Optimally you would go for statusless gremlin areas, though I can tell you based on the zero I've seen pop up in the last year or two that your quest is basically doomed; at best you'll find something like a regal node slime something or another, possibly a mixmaster or something else that's unprecedented... but even this is so unlikely that you can count on it not happening. Sort of like the lottery.

Traevelliath: Unity found one in Iron Edge Arena: Wrench Warfare (proved w/ pic); guild officer of Cursed Wanderers supposedly found a Darkfang Shield in a Danger Room from Gremlin Grounds: Clockwork Tunnels.
I'm pretty sure they only drop from tier 3 Decon zones. They maybe drop throughout Gremlin themed stratas, but I'm pretty sure it's only Decon zones.
