I'd be very wary of just handing over energy into an otherwise empty trade in general. I have never done this - but have seen many players get scammed. One should always pay the unbind fee + whatever else after the item is unbound and in the trade window. If you just hand over unbind energy, the person can just run away and trade it through alts or liquidate it into something that's not as easy to track as energy to avoid a ban.
It's unfortunate if this person is truly being nice and having a nice quitting sale, so consider this a general warning and reminder, targeting no particular individual.
