If you're going for a darker look, the Grasping Aura works pretty well. So does the Snarbolax set or basically anything Frenzy. Shadow dragon/valkyrie wings work too.
My set consists of a Divine Mantle with a Grasping Aura and Shadow valks, and a Dusky Crescent helm with a ribbon and prismatic gloweyes. Hoping to add a prism halo eventually.
My point is that simplicity works well with the right additions.
Also, what's meant by "funky"? cause nothing's coming to mind when i read that over.

Depends.
As Traev said, we'll need a bit more information. Costumes can be pretty expensive, barring hallow and frosty costumes when in season.
I dug around my screenshots to find a few costumes either I've worn or I've seen on others - some more unique than others. Perhaps you'll find some inspiration in them.

Personal Color?
When it comes to costumes, personal color can matter a lot.
What's your PC?
Is there any "style" you want? Maybe a color pattern (e.g. Regal, Cool, Hallow, Divine, Shadow, etc.)?

My first positive comment all day.
I suggest something that doesn't match at all. Be originional... and don't try to do someone else's oppinnion! Get creative! Look through your arsenal, or the wiki.
