eh, I ve left this game 2 years ago, but the music in this game is amazing and the cute character face attract me play it again. After long time AFK, I was surprised that the big change happened here, do not need energy to take elevators ,revive, and the new pet system added . All of this alterations are benefit to new player and they can adapt the environment easily. However, I was also surprised to found you guys repeat the "death of SK" over and over again. Long time no update? Maybe, if someone would like come out and give me some advices?
Am i too late to come back SK?
The game is just as fun as ever. The old annoyance of energy has been replaced by a new annoyance of heating 5-star items, as Thunder-The-Bright mentioned. And the game is not updated often. Anyone who expects it to be updated often has unrealistic expectations apparently. But the game is great.
I've been reading threads about how the game is dying/dead for over four years. If I hadn't ignored them, I would have missed out on years of fun and friends.
Let Three Rings worry about the future of Spiral Knights. Our job is to enjoy Spiral Knights.
@OP
I would say that coming in now is not too bad. Price of UVed items has dropped drastically, and if you enjoyed it 2 years ago then you'll definitely enjoy the additions.
The only thing that the game hadd 2 years ago that it doesn't have now is a big community. You will have to do your missions solo pretty much.
I was also surprised to found you guys repeat the "death of SK" over and over again
Thing is people have been saying this for as long as Spiral Knights has been alive. Take those threads with a grain of salt - it's typically someone who has finished the story missions and can't make goals for themselves.
The game itself is alive, albeit a bit barren. Not as many people online as there were at release, but that's natural in an MMO, or any game really. If you like the game, it's much more F2P friendly now, so it's much easier to get into.
Happy delving!
With the same amount of salt that you gave to mine. A troll thread.
Y'all be welcome down in the clockworks. We need a few new/old pieces of meat down there.
"The game itself is alive"
Correction
"The whales themselves are alive"
You and whales.
The game is alive.
and the whales are alive.
The game is not the whales.
The community is the whales.
The whales feed the game.
The game eats the whales.
Whales and you.

"The old annoyance of energy has been replaced by a new annoyance of heating 5-star items"
How about 5 star weapons? I mean if it needs some stuffs which need to buy with energy, or the low rate to upgrade? And, since I AFK and the last time I played with 3 stars weapon chroma suit, I don't even know the detail about 5 star in the past
Oh well, let me break it down to you, as a three year veteran, oh, and if you want a memoir portrait of your knight, be sure to pm me and I can draw you like one of my fancy french girls for free!
Break down of the heating system
Hey, remember the times when you need to pay 700CE + 100 mist to get a 5* gears? Well, OOO threw that away and replaced it with the heat crystal system, in short, in the past when you heat something, it keeps leveling up until all the heat are used up. Now it stops at the next level and don't progress until you go to forge, by pressing U, you can use heat crystals to unlock the next heat level, rinse and repeat. And as the gear level goes up, so is the demand for more crystals.
So where is problem you say? Well, once you reach 5* weapons, they require something known as radiant fire crystals to heat, and they are hard as hell to find, even the most steady stream of rad income will only lend you about 15 of them per run, and since they come from treasure box, your rad gain is completely random. It takes roughly 400~ radiant fire crystals to level a 5* gear from lvl 1 to lvl 10. So that is 20 vana run per a single fully leveled 5* gears. This system, is, dare I say, worse than the mist era?
Suffice to say, leveling 5* gears becomes a pointless, fruitless labor that will ultimately lend you minuscule improvements, it is almost slamming your face against a steel wall. You can see why so many people left this game and moved on to games where player progression isn't completely broken.
And speaking of crafting, you now require alchemy orbs to upgrade your gears, and they have a drop rate of about 1% in the clockwork. In short you have to either slave hours to find them, or buy them for, in your case, 400CE for the 4* upgrade, and now you can't even use mists.
The big update to the Spiral Knights economy was 2013-07-30. And the biggest changes were:
* Elevators no longer cost energy. So the game became easier to play (accumulating wealth faster).
* Crafting no longer cost energy. But it cost Orbs of Alchemy, which cost exactly as much energy as crafting used to. So there was no net change in crafting costs. However, occasionally you can find Orbs in the Clockworks, which therefore dramatically reduce your crafting costs relative to the old system.
* Heating used to be trivially easy; you just played with an item and it acquired heat. Now heating requires the use of Fire Crystals. And the 5-star Radiant Fire Crystals are pretty scarce. Heating 5-star items (including weapons) is by far the biggest bottleneck in making progress in the game now.
Hi, for portrait, I wanna a green eyes guy who wears the 3 level chroma suit, that is my favorite costume and I ve spent great deal of energy to create it under such tough period of limited CE and few crowns harvest per round. But its so odd the 4* suits for the additional horn attach forehead I thought.
And, are there several means to get fire crystal ? Once I found a NPC has the ability let me combine higher level fire crystal with other relatively low ones. So if it means thats might a feasible way for heating and not just collecting fire via lockdown barely?

To learn more about fire crystals, read Rarity#Fire_Crystal.
Yes, you earn fire crystal recipes by playing through the missions. But these recipes allow you only to "downgrade" fire crystals --- for example, from 4-star to 3-star.
You don't get them from Lockdown. Maybe you meant the Clockworks? You find them there.
ya, that's right, clockworks ,I confused them. Thanks your answer , I would check wiki in detail
You're definitely not too late to come back. The game needs you more than ever right now.
So, I've been playing since this game was on armorgames, and was smart enough to find a thread that told me how to transfer my account to steam.
I'm back, after my off-and-ons in 2013-2014, with my old character, and he's still a 3*.
finding elite orbs is a pain in the bucket, because I can't find orbs even on elite when I go through the whole of clockworks till I die.
which is usually around depth 13-ish, elite level, unless something like Pale scarab level or the ghost level with the candles.

If you want to try missions, look at the "O4" column in this table, to see which missions give the most 4-star orbs.

I know the places where we can find orbs, thing is that is really scarce to find, not mention collect them all to build weapons. Farming in clockwork today, fortunately i got an advanced orb in ground 5 but 9-13 through it was known as dropping in 9-13. Moreover, farming for money and buying orbs is much easier than collecting them in clockwork I found. In elite level arcade i can earn approximately 10k crowns in 1-10 or 13.
Eventhough the circumstance like this, its better than the limited energy for exploring in old version
if you found the game fun, then it's still here.
guns have been revamped. yes, all of them.
leveling 5* weapons is now a pain.
sprites can give you a big boost in versatility.
that being said yes, there have been no major updates for quite a while now.
