so people say that this game is terrible and that its dead. honestly i dont care if people think that, im one of the few people that enjoy the hell out of this game. i love the cosmetics in this game and i am wanting to spend around 100$ on it in the next two weeks, although this may not be a smart choice, i like to spend money on things that pleasure me so yes. My point is though, if people say this game is dying, and i spend 100$ on it and suddenly lets say the next day after i pay, three rings closes the game servers and the game is no longer playable. first of all, would i get my money back, and second of all, even if this doesnt happen, how long will this game last?

Happiness is the facade of the deluded

first of all, would i get my money back,

Micro-transaction on the internet 101: all your money in the cyber world is a sink cost, don't expect any returns. This is honestly why I would rather die than spending a single cent on SK yet I am willing to spend 2500 bucks of my hard earned money on painting miniatures, because guess what, even if the company producing the miniatures do shut down, I still get to keep my miniatures and continue to play.

even if this doesnt happen, how long will this game last?

This is honestly a hard one, because I have seen MMOs worse than SK (in almost every aspect) lasted for more than 11 years. If OOO actually pull their head out of their trousers and start producing some good content (even re-skinned missions are fine) on a semi-frequent bases, they could easily out last most crap MMOs out there. But at the current rate in which we are going, I would say another year or two, don't quote me on this.

Explainations

@Cavebat

What I meant by miniatures I mean these , things like these can never be taken away by the company that produced them once I purchased them. Unlike my character in SK.

well no money

well since you cleared that up, i guess im not going to spend a single penny on SK. its pretty clear the developers only want money, as they were extremely involved before but they straight up just ignore us, or just read our discussions and dont care. If they ever do start dishing out updates and make the game like it once was before and not make it feel like its coming to an end, maybe then ill start to look into spending some money. Until then, or until the game dies, im not going to contribute anything as i feel the developers need to take on a role into this game. If the devs do want money, and if your a dev and your reading this, you probably are gonna make more money by doing updates rather than working on other games. Its a risk to start into this game again, but the community will support you in the end.

Eh

People have said the game is dying before it was even out of beta. Four years later, here we still are. If you enjoy the game, don't worry about those who have already expended all their game-time on it. They've likely hit their limit, are bored of the game, yet won't move on.

You won't see defender elites complaining about "game dying", however you will see them complaining about 5* orb drops - and it's typically more of a "where do i find them" rather than "it's hopeless and 000 is dying".

So what I would say is, if you enjoy the game, spend money on it. As long as you feel you've gotten your money's worth, then good on you. Personally, I say for every hour I spend in a game, I should expect to spend a dollar on it. Personally, I have spent over $600 on Spiral Knights over several years, and you know what, 4,378 hours of game time, wonderful friendships, and an artistic inspiration are well worth the money I've spent. I'll probably spend more money on the game, and I'll probably get much more time out of it.

Bottom line, spend money on the game if you think it's worth it. I didn't get my money's worth from Assassin's Creed Revelations despite it having a pretty fun game, fair amount of side-quests, nice storytelling... But for the amount I paid for it I simply haven't gotten my money's worth. So if you think what you've gotten out of Spiral Knights is worth $100 then go for it. Personally I'd space that money out over several months buying into promos that you'd personally enamored by, unless you're going for energy in which case go nuts. The energy market would love to have more energy in it.

I see your point

i want to spend money.. but the only thing stopping me is, as written before, it wont last forever, and we dont know when the game will end. You've had 4 years with spiral knights fangel, but those four years in veteran players' perspectives are "the flourishing days" of SK. My opinion on this is that what if i literally spent 100$ and in the next year the game closed? thats exactly what im worried about. Yes, im a rash and dry person for caring so much about my money's worth, but how long will my happiness last?

what if these last years are really going to be the last years of sk

Then don't spend $100. Spend like $20 at a time. Think of it this way, according to google, the average price of a movie ticket is ~$8. The average movie is 130 minutes or a little over two hours. It's alright to spend money on things that wont last, as long as you enjoy yourself while doing so. SK is not going to explode within the next few weeks.

Yup.

It's probably better to spend money on the game as you see fit. The entertainment may be temporary, but the fun you had sticks onto you. The memory of the game will always be bittersweet, but if you see value in the game, and you have money that you want to spend, then you can either listen to your doubts or decide "you know what, I like this game and I want it to thrive. Here's some money".

Only way the studio will stay alive is if it is making money. If everyone decided to stop throwing money at Three Rings, then we would have the game shut down anyways. Since people can been calling doom since its conception, the likelihood of Spiral Knights shutting down a week after you spend money on the game is pretty low.

Spend money on the game that you're willing to give up. $20 every month or two is like, what, a couple of coffees? Few desserts you give up on having? Pass up on going to a bar for a night? It's not much at all, and if you've enjoyed Spiral Knights so far, and you still like playing it right now, don't feel bad dropping money on the game. :)

agree

Fangel is right that players have been predicting the imminent death of Spiral Knights for 4.5 years now. S/he is also right that the stuff you buy in this game has no permanent value. And Traevelliath's advice of spending a little bit at a time is wise.

Where I live, you can spend $10 on two hours of entertainment at a movie theater. Or you can spend $10 on ten hours of entertainment at a casino (depending on the casino's payouts, the stakes you play, etc.). Or you can spend $500 for one hour of certain illegal entertainment.

I mean, lots of forms of entertainment leave you with no lasting property or product. You're paying for an enjoyable experience. Calibrate your spending accordingly.
