We've had a lot of threads about this over the years, but no recent ones that I can find, so here's some standard tactical advice.
* If you're playing in a party (not solo), then try to stay together. Otherwise, the front of the party will spawn grimalkins that will munch the back of the party.
* Be conservative about candles. Light the candle near you, kill a monster, then light the candle again, even though it hasn't gone out yet.
* Be conservative about obstacles. If a huge number of breakable blocks are in your way, then break some, retreat to the candle to make your grimalkin disappear, and then break some more.
* You can shield-bump grimalkins to get a little bit of space.
* Use MSI (movement speed increase) to improve your dodging and ASI (attack speed increase) to help break blocks in your way quickly.
Like the rest of this game, practice helps. Once you memorize the room layouts that are used in the random level generation, then you figure out how to handle each one. Only a couple are actually tricky, because they require/tempt you to stay away from a candle.

Just run around them.
Light candles wherever possible, those destroy Grimalkins (the "big kats").
Dash into the Grimalkin if you can't escape, that'll also destroy the Grimalkin without damage.

my advice
shield bumping is working, but it is quite dangerous if you really Need it in a tight Situation. if something goes wrong, then your shield has totally no protecting effect here (Grimalkats ignore shield)
My best adcive is as Vanaduke-Destroyer already mentioned the dash-through. In General, you are completelly immune to any damage source a Monster can create while in the air of dashing, just try it out ;)
Note that it only works with dashing. Shield bash will NOT work here.
Aside that, use the other General strategies that Bopp mentioned.

I'm a Wizard
Here are some generic tips.
*If you're good at determining where Pulsar shots explode, you can knock them back. If you have one.
*If you Shield you're toast.
*I have an elemental gun so I just run and shoot in Candlestick Keep. That probably isn't helpful.
*If you hate Candlestick Keep, then just run like a complete coward.
*Do that dash thing that Vana said.
*Orange candles have a duration of 30 seconds. In an arena thing, you probably don't want light all 4 candles, probably just 2.
*If you get frozen then ask for help.
*If you get shocked then stop shielding and start dashing, unless you're in candlelight.
Lure them into the candlelight and they will disappear.
