I have gotten to the point of the game where I'm supposed to craft 4 Star items, but I cannot find any orbs! I know where to find them, and I have completed all of the missions necessary. I'm not sure how much time I will have to spend to find Elite Orbs of Alchemy, and more importantly, I'm not sure I'm willing. I know there is so much more to Spiral knights, and I want to enjoy it. Does anyone have any suggestions? Will Eternal Orbs of Alchemy be even more discouraging?
Oh no!
Eternal orbs are very easy to find. The missions will hand out a lot of eternals iirc.
Keep running Sewer Stash on Elite (first depth only). Do not go into the elevator, and do not destroy any enemies unless necessary. Just break all the treasure boxes, and ignore everything else. Again, once you get to the end of the level (lichenous lair), don't go on the elevator - open up the Missions and rejoin the Sewer Stash mission. Do this over and over until you find as many Elite orbs as you need. Or you can earn Energy through various ways and get what you need.
I promise you that Elite orbs are the most difficult to find.
This is a frequently asked question. My prepared answer, including links to data sets and other advice is here. Good luck.
Elite orbs are the hardest to get. Quickest method for only orbs would be the sewer stash method anderson gave there. Other good ways to get orbs are by running boss runs a lot, as you'll also acquire quite a few crowns that you can turn into energy via the energy market. If you want to keep things interesting, try running the tier 2 arcade.
Also, make sure you're on the elite difficulty. Rarity drops are pretty low otherwise.
Eternals you'll get a lot of because they drop pretty much throughout all of tier 3, and that's where you'll spend most of your game life after becoming 4*. You might find yourself in a similar situation at the 5* wall, however with access to better paying levels and more powerful gear, it won't be as bad.
I don't know what everyone's saying, eternals are not easier to get at the OP's stage. Defender elites don't farm Vana all day.
You could either:
1) spend $10-20 and skip farming (both 4 and 5*)
2) farm rt/jk for elites, and rotting metro for shinies & eternals
You don't need to farm vanaduke to get eternals. Eternals drop everywhere is tier 3 however, whereas elites only drop reliably in stratum 4. Seeing as tier 3 has, what, 10 or so depths to it, that's a lot of time to find eternal orbs, and since they aren't competing with simple, advanced, or elite orbs for a majority of their depths, when you find an orb in tier 3 it's likely to be eternal, whether it's depth 19 or depth 28.
To be honest, you have the exact same drop chance to get an eternal orb as you do an elite one, you'll just find yourself in depths where only eternals can drop more often than elite orbs, hence elite orbs are artificially rarer because they share drop tables with other orbs.
^Very true, but since rt and jk are just as easily accessible, it isn't too much different farming for each orb type.
I'd actually go with Axes of Evil if you just want to break boxes repeatedly. Start the level, go down / left, break boxes, restart if no orbs. Bring an alchemer for the far boxes.
Sewer Stash is still good if you want heat & crowns as well (by killing the enemies)
Also, the first floor of Sewer Stash is a common choice for farming.
If you can't find any and don't want to wait, you can also purchase them in the supply depot (remember you can purchase energy for crowns).

It's mentioned fairly often that Eternal orbs are easier, at lest from what I've heard.
