We all ready know what chess is right? good
how about a spiral knights version but with rewards

Players could place bets up to 50k crowns or 2000 energy.
Spectate matches as usual, we can use bots as chess pieces.

Pawns would wear a fencing jacket and a spiral sallet.

Rooks would wear Ironmight plate mail set

Knights would wear Warden armor set + shield (http://wiki.spiralknights.com/Spiral_Warden) these guys not the costume.

Bishops would wear Divine veil set

King would wear Almirian Crusader set

Queen would wear Sacred Sentinel set

All armor themes would be replace with a custom.

White and black theme for chess of course.
With customize able boards and board types.

[Update]
BUT! they are made of stone and the player has to pick up throw and place the chess pieces
like the Trojan statues you can find sometimes in arcade.
you can just recycle a sword animation, so it looks like they are hitting with their fist.
there is gonna need to be a death animation of the chess pieces shattering since into dust
and have all of them have glowing eyes that match the players energy so.

The chessboards will float in the air and have rocket boosters in the corners.

kinda like wizard chess from harry potter but better,
except in spiral knights.

And you can play these chess tournaments for money or for free you can challenge each other and have money put on the line or just play ranked matches for free. either way I think chess would be a fun idea. this would be in the minigame section of course.

2d20's+ Cha modifier-Wis modifer= what I think of you...

I love the idea and would be totally into it, but this is kinda a game for 10yr olds, and I don't think bashing monsters over the head with cool swords would be dropped for a spot of chess.

@ego, the TOS states that it's geared toward 13+

Though you're right, still lots of young'uns.

This reminds me of a thing I saw in a Guild Hall room, where various 1x1 Furnishings were chess pieces. Going into Design mode would enable you to move said pieces. Given that the Guild Hall rooms are the exact tile count of a chessboard, we actually do have the game of Chess in our Isoran-claimed world.

Following that, though, I'd totally be down for moveable stone chess pieces as Guild Hall Furnishings.

I believe at one point there were some files in the Spiral Knights folder that looked something like this. It never got integrated though.

a guild hall model thing could work

We have a chess board set up at the tinkering gremlins guild hall, it would look much nicer with real pieces

@vohtarak

I believe yours was the one I mentioned, now that I think about it. Absolutely genius.

yeah, I haven't seen any others

We got it as a result of tink not wanting to set up online chess games, so we just go into design mode for it now

I'm a Wizard

I would drop hunting for shiny spheres to play a game of chess.

eh

Spiral Knights is an action/puzzle game. Chess is a strategy/puzzle game. The severe change of pace in the game would be very out of place.

Besides, if I want to go play chess there's plenty of other places I can do it. I can see a Spiral Knight twist being involved, but that would involve a lot more than just "chess".

Yes: I like chess, I like Spiral Knights. Spiral Knights + Chess must be good thing, yes?

No: I think it's a bit of a stretch to call Spiral Knights an action/puzzle game. It's really just a lootmill with a few locked doors and bullet hell stages, so the contrast would be even more stark than Fangel lets on. If you are really suggesting a vanilla chess mini-game, then I'm going to pass...

Maybe so?: But if you are suggesting, or willing to adopt an alternative chess themed mini-game, stage and/or event I'm definitely in.

Yeah

Spiral Knights is definitely a puzzle game but it is not a very strong portion of the game. Most puzzles are simple to not make the action slow down. Half of the main bosses are puzzles (roarmy, snarby) and various levels have puzzle aspects included in them.

Again, the puzzles are really tame in comparison to a dedicated puzzle game, but the point still stands that the pace of chess is really out of place of anything we have currently in the game.

A puzzle in the clockworks being chess themed (i.e., you can only move the pieces in a chess format, and/or have to make the move to "checkmate") would be brilliant. Making a more fast paced chess game where you battle for control of places while a giant game of chess is happening, but an "overseer" can only move their piece to a location their team controls/is neutral, and after a minute both players can move a piece anyways... That would be a good action-paced PvP game. Implement it so that your team's pieces also spawn friendly monsters similar to what the piece looks like and you're golden.

Games would be long, but packed with action and be a twist on the standard game of chess.

@fangel

Those sound pretty cool, and it would be intetesting to see them implemented.
However, as Spiral Knights is inherently themed on chess to a certain extent, there's no reason it couldn't be added as, say, a mini-game room in guild halls, such as TG.
Maybe not a whole PvP system for it, of course. Just a Hall room that consists of a forcefield and non-colliding, moveable statues.

Eh

That's just a design mode room with a reset button. While it works the camera angle can be a bit odd.

I mean it's possible but we don't need tabletop simulator in Spiral Knights. A spiral twist on chess would be more fun and original than a chess room that a tiny fraction of players would use (whereas a spiral chess game would bring in a whole new type of gameplay).

well...

It's not really a simulator. There wouldn't be any mechanics to it at all, just pieces. I mean, the Guild Hall already had the checkered floor thing beforehand.

@All

I've read all of the comments and I'm thinking hmm a strategy in an action game?
well there isn't much to do in the self I'd think a bit of gambling would be fun am I right
there really should be more games in coliseum I don't see much other people making suggestions about it there is
literally only 2 games the game can feel boring overtime and I know what your thinking isn't chess wait simulator?
in a sense yes but you'd be better your skill to outsmart everyone else with all your money no if your asking what does any of this have to do with any of your messages I have no idea... but the idea of a spiral knights twist to chess would be fun any suggestions for this "twist"

uhh

"any suggestions for this "twist" "

"Making a more fast paced chess game where you battle for control of places while a giant game of chess is happening, but an "overseer" can only move their piece to a location their team controls/is neutral, and after a minute both players can move a piece anyways... Me, literally four posts above yours

If you need a less splurge version, here we go:

  • Players are separated into teams of 4 to 6.
  • Game takes place on a huge chess board, and one player from each team takes up role as "overseer"
  • The overseer is essentially the player who is controlling the giant chess pieces

  • There are 3 colored spaces - team 1 colors, team 2 colors, and grey. The overseer can only place pieces on squares that are grey or their team color
  • A team captures a square similar to lockdown capture points
  • A captured square will revert to a neutral square slowly over time - the process taking 90 seconds naturally
  • King and queen pieces on any space will regenerate their team's space at an equal rate to the decay. If you own the space your king is on, then it cannot be captured by the other overseer - the other team must neutralize the spot first.

  • Team colored/status enemies will spawn from the "chess" pieces if they are on a team colored space.
  • Enemies spawn sporadically. This is to make taking the king or queen pieces much harder.

  • If one team's overseer has not moved a piece for a set amount of time (30 seconds to a minute), then the other team's overseer will get an opportunity to move their piece
  • This is to make the overseer's job much more involved. Your team can set up captures for you, or you can help set up assaults for your team. If your team owns the spaces your pieces are on then your piece is safe, but you can't delay them forever.

There you have it, a fast paced team chess match. No need for bets either.
