Question to everyone who has been here for a long time

Forgive me if this question is out of place, haven't visited this forum in months. If you have been playing for a long time (I won't post a specific time since everyone's view on that is subjective), what keeps you playing? I have personally quit and restarted a total of 11 times (yes, all accounts went to vanguard and got rage deleted, only to come back for more, until finally I quit for good. SK you clingy girlfriend you.....), since the amount of people playing kept dwindling.

On my first account, I could log on and find a T2 or T3 LD match within seconds, or join some friends and gets destroyed together on a shock greaver arena (since missions weren't a thing). On my last account, all I found were whales in haven trying to sell the stuff they hoarded, and waiting minutes to get into a LD match with the 20 total people who play.

I realized that it was insanity, trying to come back every time expecting a different result. I know OOO is a great group of people, talking to them in support and seeing their posts, they always seem like nice, happy people. But not knowing what happened behind the scenes and not hearing from them when people asked legitimate questions was not cool. I am sure they had their reasons, but to me that was not cool, so I quit. I would've stayed if they had said almost anything, even a "we can't afford better servers because we are going through rough times." But nothing.

Not sure if his has changed in the past few months in terms of OOO's replies to questions or new content. But if you are an old player, what keeps you playing?

Not that old account

Im not that veteran player. I play the game for almost 2.5 years now.
I never actually wanted to start it, but a friend of mine literally dragged me into it. My first thought was : what the hell is this childish looking miniature running around hack and slash stuff ? Then i started playing and before i knew it i grinded snarbolax like a madman :D Childish turned into cute, and running around into doing missions or just having fun in arcade.
Gotta say, it got into my top 5 games of all times since then. And im still playing it. I took a 1-2 months hiatus once tho'. I cant even remember why.
So what keeps me playing?
For the most part, online friends from all over the world in this game. I still play from time to time with Tota-Batuta, who helped me through my first missions <3
Of course there are many friends, who faded away since, like Troyfel the brittish guy with his great television voice and accent who taught me the basics of FSC and speedrunning Vana.
I actually always found something new, something interesting in the game. I liked challenging myself into reducing time of missions, or even a full arcade run. But most challenges were of course about events, and Vana. Like for example do D27 last room with all 4 trojans dead statue still not destroyed... or doublekill the spawning trojans with 1 blitzcharge... etcetc.
Always cherished the moment, when i found a great player who i didnt know yet, and could play with from then on.
And of course (like my mentors helped me once) eventually i started to help others in missions be it casual play, or serious grinding. And most of the time i really enjoy helping people. Specially when it turns out that the person wants to learn more and more about the game. And after some time they end up wanting the same thing like me: speedrun FSC the faster the better... Yeah probably not the most crown-efficient way, but its not far from it if you play it good. And the main point is that its deffinately the most fun way.
And naturally even nowadays after all those runs... every now and then still comes a player and shows something new to me, something that i see and i want to learn from them or just thanking that they showed it to me. :D
Besides those things of course i see the games problems and difficulties. But i cant really help them, so why worry about them? Lets just do one more run, shall we? :)
So yeah its rather strange but i still enjoy playing this game. And probably for the reasons above.

Well...

Recently hit the 5000 hour mark on steam, so if that doesn't count as "a long time" I don't know what does.

Spiral Knights is adorable and hits many of my marks for what I really want in a game. The friendships I've made over the years have been amazing, the memories I've created, the awe of fighting something for the first time and the beaming smile after mastering it... It's wonderful, really.

I don't need something new and flashy to keep me invested and having fun. The people, the music, the artstyle, the gameplay, the silly shenanigans I find myself in, the customization... It's all so beautiful.

I've played the game for what it was since the beginning, not for what I have, what I want to have, or what I think it should have. Maybe it's just my thankfulness for everything, big or small, but at the end of the day I would not have traded those days, weeks, and months for anything else.

Simple answer:

I'm nuts.

Complex answer:
I had come to terms that there's nothing more to come, but I enjoy what's already in front of me.

But if you are an old player,

But if you are an old player, what keeps you playing?

Honestly I am not playing actively anymore, but still, I keep a tab on things. And once in a while draw people some fancy French girls for free. I can't thank SK enough for helping me improve my art, that alone holds some sentimental value.

frequently asked question

You were quite polite in your original post, but this question is asked pretty frequently. While players give you their most recent answers in this thread, you might want to check out old threads on the same topic, for example by searching Google for what keeps you playing? site:forums.spiralknights.com.

@Bopp

Wouldnt be that "necroing" to post into those former topics tho'? While you can read peoples old responses, you cant really read new ones or ask the question again in them, right?

Guild upkeep is a pretty big reason why I play the game on a weekly basis; it's a commitment thing.
Otherwise, aside from the obvious reasons of artwork and other such finery, I'm still playing after reaching the 2k hour mark because of the fact that my Spiral Knight avatar is something I got sentimentally attached to. The Warmaster, Iron Slug, and Gorgomega keep me interested in PvE, while the various darky accessories I have equipped are nice to look at and cause me not to feel too intimidated by the big-shots in Haven with more CE than I'll ever own.

Yes, it is necroing if you post on an ancient thread. But I am not suggesting that Lethal-Bunduru post on those old threads.

And I'm not trying to stifle discussion here either. Current reasons for staying or leaving may be different from ancient reasons. On the other hand, the "too little new content" problem is not a new problem in Spiral Knights. We've been dealing with it for years.

If Lethal-Bunduru is really interested in what players do after they've done everything, then he can either (A) wait for this thread to generate a few responses over the next few days, or (B) instantaneously read 100 responses from a wide swath of players over a long time period. There's value in both.

None.

I have no reason. I've "quit". By that I mean I come around, checking the site and game for anything new or any news. I love the look of the game, I love it's idea and lore. The gameplay is fun but with no one to play with and nothing new coming around I have no reason to continue playing.
I just hope that something, someday will happen to make this game as fresh and fun as it was before.
