Hi, I'm an old player (back when the game came out). I log once every 15 months or so to see if something new or interresting is up. Last time I checked, the game really was dying. So I ask you now: is it worth it that I come back?

I'm looking for an hack n' slash type of game that can be played with a controller, and I remembered that Spiral Knights was pretty good at that.

They don't make many games like these anymore.

What's new?

no; sure; not much

Is this game dead yet?

No. You can still play everything, although the population did drop off around last September.

So I ask you now: is it worth it that I come back?

Sure. The old stuff is as fun as always. Of course, if you've done everything, then you might not find that old stuff fun anymore. But there is no harm in playing a bit, if you still find it charming.

What's new?

Not much. The game is rarely updated. For a detailed record of what has happened since you left, whenever that was, start with Release/all.

It's fun!

I enjoy it a lot! It's not going anywhere. Invite your friends and stuff, that makes it more interesting.

You are experiencing a PICNIC ERROR!

@Ceddy

If you want a hack'n'slash game that works with the gamepad, I suggest trying Ys Origin. It's on sale at Steam and it's a load of fun...though its normal difficulty is a tad harder than SK. You'll probably be dying some on the bosses, but figuring out the bosses is part of the fun. (And there's always a checkpoint right before the bosses so you can try as many times as you want.)

But SK is still around, yes, but fewer peeps. If you haven't done all of the Shadow Lairs you could try that. Or if you haven't finished the missions then do that.

no!

spiral knights cannot die.

It's survived SO LONG. so many years. It's basically undead at this point.

we've come too far to give up now. This game will go down in history, I'm confident.

Rule for everyone

Who wins the lottery out of the 500ish players that are left playing this game. You must spend it on this game, by buying it and support it. Cause this game is too short to be dead.

A Possible Revival...

Now I know this may sound crazy to a few of you so let me give some depth to my suggestion here.

I've been a player of this game since around 2011 and I stopped playing around 2013, not because I didn't like the game, but I just didn't have time. I came back recently and it almost broke my heart (not to sound pathetic) that a game I had enjoyed so much when I was younger was dying. I remember when haven would be so overcrowded that you could barely see where you were going. Now you're lucky if there are more that 10 people there.

This will sound pretty ridiculous to a lot of people but Grey Havens should try and port Spiral Knights to Mobile Devices. It has been left behind by other PC games of its kind but there are no games of this quality on the App Store or Play Store. Devices like the iPhone have come a long way since this game was first created and there is a chance that they would be able to run an optimised version of the game quite easily.

If properly advertised, this game could become one of the biggest games on the App Store and nothing would need to be changed. The whole game could be ported over with its current micro transactions system as it is a well known fact that there are people who play mobile games that just throw their money at games of much lower quality than a game as good as this. Please consider this, as I really do not want to see a game like this go to waste.

(To anyone reading this, please repost so that Grey Havens sees this)

That's a great idea, but...

There are always "buts", and i'm not saying this is a bad idea, it's a great idea, but porting the game to android is not an easy task because of the game's engine (java). And it would take a serious large number of people and resources to do it. What i'm trying to say is, it's risky. Incredibly risky, because they will invest many resources and time into the process, and not all android games become popular (not saying it wouldn't but we need to keep in mind it can happen) and 90% of popular android games fall 2 months later of it release, but it's not devs fault, it's most android gamer's aren't loyal to their games.

Note: Either it was SEGA or Three Rings released a game called "Rise of Knights" some years ago, the whole plot and art is inspired in Spiral Knights but it doesn't have a direct link to the events in Cradle (as far as i know)

I did some research and i didnt found this game in the app store nor the play store, so i assume this game is dead.

I just hope the new devs advertise

if they advertised we'd get more players which would cause inflation on the energy but that means the price would go down to buy 100.

but that also means the devs would probably get more money because more new players spending which might mean more updates.

America to Columbus :p

In my opinion, advertising might be the key for success. Some of you might say that this game lacks content to make us players more interested in it, but seeing what we already have... this game has all!!!

->Free to play
->Storyline and lore
->Hack and slash
->co-op gameplay and pvp arena battle
->socializing through guilds and friends
->almost-endless exploring of a diverse world
->Annual events
And this is just some things

Besides of "filling some holes" in the game, SK doesnt need much more to get people's attention except that... oh, people need to find SK, but unlike Columbus discovering America, it must be America traveling to Columbus, and the best way to do it is through a Galleon called "Advertising".

I totally agree

Lots of people search for games in the catagory ''free'' on steam, however Spiral Knights is not in that list, while it definitely should be. I think it would help increase the SK population but I don't know how or why steam does this.

Oh quite the contrary, it is in the list of free games. If you click on the Most Popular tab and go to page 9, it's there.

There it is. As Pothis said, it is on page 9 on steam. Page 9. I don't think many people look past the first few pages.

page 9??

When i started to play SK, it was in the 3rd page or so. SK was a pioneer game at the time, and one of the first free to play games to be released in to Steam platform.

We surely know Rise of Knights has been dead for a long time, since OOO had no plans to continue it, & thanks to SEGA's layoffs shutting them down, there won't likely be planned revivals to it.

Honestly, that game didn't look too interesting, cause it lacked all the excitement and proper dynamics to storytelling you'd expect from any game. Not to mention the story & gameplay there is lackluster from a mobile game.

SK still has potential, and we can still give the support the game still deserves.

Perhaps whatever scrapped content, story and lore, like locations besides Cradle, will more likely be integrated into SK to broaden the game with more variety in many ways one day. It's possible to salvage what they were making and appear in SK in some altered form.

Also, on an unrelated note, Club Penguin's being shut down after about 11 years of being operational. Take that outside if you want to express your reactions to that news. Thought you should know just in case you haven't yet.

Yeah its probably dying

I come back to these forums every several months to see if the game has either finally gotten a new content patch or is shutting down...

Same thing as always though. Prize box updates and an ever shrinking community that still boggles me as to why the game still hasn't caved in from low revenue, and why people still spend hundreds on this stale game.

"They don't make many games like these anymore."

That's the sad part about SK, and if the game had the same amount of originality as an MMO nowadays, I would have went 'Hahaha nope', left, and not looked back.

"As Pothis said, it is on page 9 on steam. Page 9. I don't think many people look past the first few pages."

Also, I think after a while of playing, a regular user would think about the game they are playing, take a look at the update log, and realise that spending time on SK is literally like beating a /dead/ horse.

The game declined starting

The game declined starting from the removal of mist energy.

Anyways, the focus on aesthetics rather than actual content killed it.

It had a good story going, but they just stopped it...

quick note

i would like to note that once I was in haven 2 with 1 other person (ONE). I waited at least 10 minutes and nobody else showed up. do you know how weird that was??? this is kind of proof of how much this game is in need of more players. or the return of older ones. one which I know will not return. because of the fire crystal update.

Havens have interesting instances. There's up to 3 or 4 Havens, and players get thrown into them. A better indicator of how populated Haven is is to click on the "Instances" button on the top right of your screen in Haven, and go to the most populated one.

The other Havens could have easily been full so it plopped you two into a new instance.

It is posssible. They would

It is posssible.

They would need advertising though ($$) to attract players, optimize the code, networking, and servers ($$$$$$), and redo aspects of the story progression to retain players ($$).

AKA not happening. But still possible

Pshh, don't listen to

Pshh, don't listen to Lethal-Bunduru. The game can't be popular again because it honestly never really was that big to begin with comparatively speaking.

The game's gotten stagnant several years ago and lost most of its original player base which wasn't very big to begin with even after the 2013 Steam release. No matter how much advertising, "code optimization", "networking", "server", and various buzzword reworks they do (lol), former SK fans and fans of MMO type games have already dispersed/settled elsewhere in newer games that update substantially on a regular basis.

I'm pretty sure the forum population's tired of doomsayers. If you enjoy the game, more power to you. I'm not here to take that enjoyment away. But you'd have to be delusional to think SK is flourishing just because you can't let go, or are new and experiencing things for the first time.

Casinos are occasional, seasonal updates are seasonal, most announcements are based around cosmetics, and it's nearly been a year since Grey Havens had taken control. That isn't to say they aren't doing anything because they're clearly still making artistic updates. But quite frankly, I'm surprised they're even investing their resources in this game still at all.

It seems like a very unfulfilling job even if it does make self-sustaining money.

So if this game is dying then does anybody have an alternative game? because I would be pretty bored without this.

No.

The people I invited to play sometime ago still play and they in turn invite their friends to play. So I doubt it will die anytime soon especially when a young one spends CE like monopoly dollars.

Game isn't "dying", it just never was huge or robust to begin with. That doesn't mean it doesn't have a community, or it isn't fun, it just was never "so big" to start with. As long as you enjoy the game for what it is then that's really all you need to do.

There have been claims the game has been dying since it was in beta. That was over six years ago. The game will go on for more, so long as it remains supported by modern operating systems.

So sit down, grab a sword, and have fun! :)
