The current meta

2* = primarily just bad

3* = defensive against whatever, crap against everything else need more shields cover that too

4* = more defensive but also enemies deal serious status effects really need extra shields

5* = super ultra defensive. If you're fighting one thing if not well get 200 shields to win cover all bases done

5* level 10 = more defensive. Now worth crafting to. Still worse than heating weapons.

The new meta

2* = highly defensive compared to T2 enemies; stress importance of shields. Resists a wide breadth of enemies.

3* = same defensive, gain an offensive, defining perk. No more bingo card of shields per status/element.

4* = more defensive, but much less defensive compared to T3 enemies than 2/3* are compared to T2 enemies.

5* = same defenses as 4*, furthers offensive perk.

5* level 10 = increased shield regeneration, as visible perk. Only a 15% buff. Highly exciting.

Example shield: royal jelly

2* = Piercing/Normal/Elemental, resists fire/poison/stun

3* = Same as 2* but gains damage vs beasts and fiends med

4* = Same as 3* but slightly more HP and resists

5* = same as 4*, damage vs beasts and fiends high

Please don't change shields, I feel as though they're the one thing that's done well in this game.

"Please don't change shields, I feel as though they're the one thing that's done well in this game."

But they're not; the game has maybe five shields worth a dang. (Swiftstrike, Barbs, Omega, Crest, Gray Feather, roughly in that order.)

What's the deal with...

What's the deal with the Grey Owlite Shield anyway? How good is status resist anyway? I've just been using Aegis (thinking of attempting to get crest of almire), and I've been doing fine. Why does everyone use grey owlite?

@ Toyoti

Didn't know you still play, Toyoti.

And yes, I totally agree. We need the ultimate shield. It goes up to 7* And we'll call it the dragon ball. I have the upgrade path right here

1* = Dragon Ball

2* = Charging Up

3* = Still Charging Up

4* = Wait until the next episode

5* = Lend Me Your Strength

6* = SPIRIT BOMB

7* = THE POWER LEVEL IS OVER 9000!!!

The charge will attack will take 10 hours, and you have to hold the attack button for 10 hours but it summons Shenron and destroys everything.

PS. Doesn't Matter, Had Fun.

@ Pandabear,
I mean, the mechanics of shields in general. Shield bumping / Shield bashing / hit skipping / animation canceling. Of course they'd have the balancing wrong. When they had the gunner update, they changed a mechanic for the guns. You can no longer weapon switch with guns without a shield. You can still do it with swords, but not with guns. Essentially nerfing guns in the update. That's the kinda change I'm scared of if they're gonna completely rehaul the shield system. I'm with you on that though, I'm all for balancing.

Rather than forcing players to get one shield type for everything by having their shield not work the idea is to create a reason for players to want to craft additional shields. When you create a reason for players to want something, you don't need to artificially require players to collect as many of them because they're going to likely want to do it anyway. This would maintain the current shield mechanics and would primarily just be a buff, much more so at lower levels than higher ones. I envision 2* shields to function like current 3*, and 5* to function like 4* shields but with additional shield charging time, making them weaker but more flexible in the right hands. Overall shields would get a much broader spectrum of defenses, which would be their main buff.

The big difference however is the perk. Instead of choosing from piercing/elemental/shadow, you're choosing from say...

-Damage high vs beasts/fiends, or whatever other 2 families are offered
-Damage v. high vs gremlins + sword asi med
-Global MSI low/CTR low
-Global damage low/bomb ctr low
-Global damage reduced high, bomb ctr very high
-Sword OR gun ctr low, sword asi low

See the difference? These are fun and interesting.

@Ze-Epic

I'm not going to google everything for you and I'm sometimes wrong but I can definitely tell you that natural shield status resists = immunity to that status for that shield, so if you get hit by normal + elemental + fire you'd only take the normal + elemental part on your shield if it resisted fire. The best way to plan your shields currently is to get 2 shields that cover all the main status effects, like crest of almire and dread skelly.

well... I was going to make a separate post...

I was going to make a separate thread for this idea but I guess Ill just post it here. My way to make shields more interesting, give all the 5star shields a unique shield bash/ability.
Like barb thorn would make a cool looking snarbolax animation when you dash and it would shoot out some aoe spikes that do area damage. ( the snarb effect wouldnt deal as much damage as the others because the shield already has an ability ( attack damage med for swords).

maybe some of the other ones could inflict multiple status instead of just stun. Like dragon scale shield would do a little fang of vog charge,

skelly shield could fear monsters,

royal jelly could slow down enemies by covering a larger area in slime on impact,

owlite could send off projectile owls sort of like antigua charge ( but maybe 3 smallers owls that boomerang in random directions and return to your shield),

crest of almire, purifies a small area around you when you dash removing any negative status effect on teammates inside the area,

omega shell would leave you with some rotating shell fragments as a barrier that absorbs damage for a short time after bash.

And for another random one, it could increase your damage based on how many enemies you hit with it.
I could keep going but I think those are enough examples.

@Defeat

That's actually a really good idea. It would definitely make sense to give every shield at least a different damage type as well as status effects when need be. More than that is only better.

@Toyoti

Wait you don't actually play Spiral Knights? You're welcome to discuss things with us here.. you're just likely going to be a bit.. lost. I'd definitely get on that. There is a ton of good content for you right now, incredibly good shield balance or no.
