Every image on the wiki has been replaced by a red link, usually "(page title).png", and clicking the link opens a page that asks me if I want to upload an image.

Anyone else notice this?

This error was replicated on my home desktop, my IPad, and a school laptop (each uses a seperate wifi network as well), so I'm fairly sure it's not on my end.

Yes, it has been mentioned in many threads, for example in General Discussion. But pointing it out in Wiki Editors seems like a good idea.

*sigh*

Support is aware of the issue and they have notified the devs. Regarding additional information, I'll just copy-paste what I posted in another wiki editor thread, because this issue is likely linked to the recent entire-wiki-derp (the topic of that thread):

It seems that images are not showing up for people.

There is still a log of all images here. Please do not upload files to these "empty" file locations. "Nobody seeing any images on the wiki" has happened before, and it was fixed relatively quickly. I'm sure the admins will let us know if they are unable to fix it.

In the meantime, the text-based information is back up. Hurray!

stuffs broken yo

Any official update we can get on fixing the wiki? Images have been busted for nearly 2 weeks now. I know GH is fixing things from the OOO buyout, but if what Dracora says is true and this could've been a quick fix, there's no reason for it to have taken this long.

Does anyone actually know what the problem is?

I just figured that OOO stopped hosting the images and GH haven't picked it back up yet?
I'd be curious to know what other people thought the problem was.

Does that mean that the images in the wiki are somehow connected on steam? If that's true, Jackalopi might be right...

Some more...news.

Attempting to upload images to the wiki (I tried to upload the news image for the 18 May update) will result in the following "Internal error" message:

The upload directory (public) is missing and could not be created by the webserver.

So basically we're just waiting for something to to get "plugged in," like a puzzle piece. It's a lot more complicated than that, of course. All we can do is wait.

Hopefully this will get even more attention now that the lovely 18 May update is live. A wiki without images is really...well, y'all know.

We have not forgotten and the wiki is as important to us in GH as it is to you all! The wiki images went AWOL since the move for reasons unknown, we are trying to fix it but they are very stubborn. We will continue to look into it and resolve as soon as possible!

Update/Status

Files are again able to be uploaded and seen.

The upload directory (public) is missing and could not be created by the webserver = no longer an issue. This is likely cause for celebration, and you should consider throwing confetti in-game. As an experiment and necessity, I uploaded something - here's the most recent news blog image. The admins have also made uploads - check recent changes.

What I find important is forced history visualization:

Please take careful notice of this file's information.

Uploading new versions of old files will force the file's page to show its history (instead of the raw upload page/public directory error we've been seeing), but lacking the thumbnail visual - as you can see for the version uploaded 17 April 2011 by Equinox, vs. the newer versions uploaded 23 May 2016.

The only thing that worries me is that the date-link of the 2011 file jumps to what appears to be a new index. Hopefully, they can find the old index and hook it up puzzle-piece style. Riding this train of thought, I am extremely hesitant to upload any new images, in case the indexes cannot merge for whatever reason. The wiki has given us a hard time already, I wouldn't be surprised if it continues to be moody.

My point being:

Definitely still wait - do not upload new versions of files we know were already there in the past. That's a huge amount of work that very likely will not be needed, just continue to be patient and hunt for those GScoins.

Waiting for images...

Hello,

I'm new to this game and I'm willing to learn all about it.
Hope this image thing gets fixed...

As Dracora said, lets wait for the old images instead of uploading redundant ones.

@Mitchell-Mi

We have discerned that the issue is "loss" of the original file index (and not a variety of other issues we've encountered in the past that had similar symptoms).

Regarding Mitchell-Mi's comment in the other thread (if you would just paste what you wrote there into comment #14 here, that would be nice), fixing images is actually an incredibly arduous task - be it rectifying index/directory issues or manual uploads. Far from a "simple fix." If it were that simple, we would have fixed it already.

It would take far longer than "someone's day" to reupload all the images after "just take[ing] photos." Fortunately, a few of us have several of the more process-heavy files (the ones requiring recolors and specific angles, not to mention animation exporting) saved in our personal folders - I have an external hard drive that's got most of my work over the years, and I hope Icytea has kept all those icons.

I've been in contact with support through all of this trying to find solutions, but we might have to bite the bullet, which has been my worst fear all along - uploading all those files is a horrendous task and annoyingly, it's our labor repeated to an extent. I am more upset about the historical loss (what the old icons used to look like etc.). That being said, we will have a functional wiki eventually, through all of this hardship. And that is something to be happy about.

Here's the most recent support line:

Thank you for all of your help. As you've noticed, it is now possible to upload images without an error. We're currently working to see if we can fix the old index, but it's looking increasingly likely that all images will have to be re-uploaded. This, obviously, isn't ideal. If this happens we'd be incredibly dependent on help from our wiki editors. With our small team we wouldn't be able to do it on our own. We'll post in your thread as soon as we know more.

If this comes to pass, there is a very specific process we must follow, so don't jump to the task too eagerly. The Style Guide should help new editors get an idea before we start this engine for the long haul, if we even have to.

And so, we continue to wait. Don't panic.

Wiki Reconstruction Begins!

Hello,

As noted, we have fixed the ability to upload images and have tested it to make sure it's stable. Unfortunately, the images that lived there are now permanently gone and will need to be re-uploaded. Obviously this isn't something we're happy about, but we'd like to start the process of re-uploading everything.

Due to the size of our current team, we will not be able to do this ourselves. Most of the wiki was created by our players and we're going to have to rely on your talent again to help. This is going to be a long term project and we don't expect that people volunteering their time can re-upload all these images right away.

If you're interested in helping, thank you! It probably makes sense to prioritize more important pages or the pages that are used most often. We also want to be sure we're using The Style Guide to help maintain consistency and matching the correct images to the correct names. If you're not sure how to do that, please ask in this thread.

The vast majority of images can be found in the archive. You can adjust the date at the top to try to find the most recent save of the page you're working on:

http://web.archive.org/web/20160110205210/http://wiki.spiralknights.com/...

Thank you again to anyone who decides to volunteer their time. You're the reason the wiki was previously so useful and you're the reason it will once again be helpful to our community.

Well, that's... surprising.

Thanks for letting us know, Cronus. Bit of good news and bad news.

Well, I hope those who have done the image uploading to the game's wiki have backed up whatever old images of the game for such a possibility where they uploaded their copies in the wiki were lost while they lived there.

Moreover, it's great to be able to upload images to the game's wiki again. Restoring what's been lost is gonna take long, indeed...

Priorities:

1) Icons (especially materials, monster, status, perks)
2) Stats Images
3) Tooltip visuals
4) Functional wiki images (such as the "tutorial" icon)
5) Anything else (map images, screenshots of levels, accessory recolor tooltip images, aesthetic animations)

Make sure you're not already uploading something someone else already has. To force changes to appear, try editing and saving a target page without making changes. Normally we always check recent changes, though with the sheer number of uploads, this won't be as useful. File history should show up after someone reuploads, so this shouldn't be a huge problem.

It would be incredibly prudent to put one of the following in your upload comment:

Uploading from WaybackMachine to recover from image index loss. See node http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/114464#comment-1031635 for details.

Uploading from game files to recover from image index loss. See node http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/114464#comment-1031635 for details.

Be careful that your personal device does not change WaybackMachine file downloads that you want to reupload in any way. Some programs like to automatically merge layers, so transparent backgrounds turn black etc.

Do not upload "recolor" icons straight from the game files. They have the odd red/blue/green/pink etc. coloring that is not visible during gameplay. We can upload several equipment icons straight from the game files, if you find that to be faster than the WaybackMachine as I have.

When you upload, you'll get a warning. Ignore it and upload anyway.

I've got to get to real-world work now, good luck all.

Well I try to help but not changes are seen

I'm uploading some images as I did on my old times, but I see no changes after uploading the files so I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or just broke again the wiki... if you can upload a tutorial with some steps to recover the images from "http://web.archive.org/web/20160110205210/http://wiki.spiralknights.com/." If I see changes later I will post again.

UPDATE

I found why it didn't appear, you just have to go to an edit section of another part of the same article and save it without doing any changes, as you refresh that article you will see the changes (the images are seen now)

Thanks for the help

This is and will continue to be a monumental effort.

A major point of concern: do not upload tiny images (especially of icons). If you can't find the true color icon in the files or via wayback, then move your attention to the plethora of other images that need attention.

As stated in comment #21, do NOT upload tiny versions of icons. This is definitely not a "better than nothing" scenario, as such uploads create more work for everyone, and we definitely already have enough work to do. If you can't find the true color+true size icon from the files or the WaybackMachine, find other files to fix.

Weapon icons should be restored now. That took a while! I'm going to start restoring helmet/armor/shield icons. Please let me know if I missed any weapons.

Edit: Shield icons should all be restored.

Edit 2: Sprite icons, skill icons, and pod icons should all be restored. I also restored as many helmets and armors as I could. Couldn't figure out how to do the proto/gunner update ones without having the wrong size, so instead of risking messing up, I'll leave it to someone who does know how. Thank you in advance!

That has long been a cache issue, unrelated to this debacle. Given time, they'll show up just fine for logged out users as well.

Regarding all them accessories.

I have many accessory files (and animations) in personal storage. When I have the time, and after the more important files are squared away, I'll dig these out and restore them.

Ah!

I was wondering why all the images in the wiki disappeared. Now i know it's not my computers fault!

Unforuntately, the Wayback Machine doesn't have my user page archived so there is no way for me to retrieve my images I used. (The only place I can think off where they still could be is on my laptop which my parents have in possession and don't seem like returning to me :/)

Besides this, i wish everyone good luck with recovering the files!
