So, I've been waiting for this event for a while so I can craft the Obsidian edge, However, every time I get to the grasping plateau, the game just closes.
I'm on Steam as well. This is the only time something like this has happened.

I did check my System, it should be more than enough to handle Spiral Knights. It's the exact same ram amount. I didn't find a file called extras, so I assume I need to create it, I'll try it out later.
Edit: It did not work, I repeat, It did not work, I experienced massive freezing, the graphics had a heart attack, and then it crashed again.
Edit: Still can't get it too work, Well... I'm not getting that obsidian edge...

I am crashing on the Grasping Plateau level as well. One time, it even made the game constantly crash on startup for an hour! I hope the developers see this and get working on the code, and perhaps they should invite players to playtest patches before getting them out for real. I feel as though if they had done that, then this would have been caught.
It's sad this is happening, because I really want the Obsidian Edge, but I guess I can just wait until the next time this event happens (or maybe we get a time extension because of this issue but I don't foresee that lol). All I can do for now is pray that our wonderful developers can find the problem quickly and easily fix it.
Note: I use Steam as well. I tried the "extra.txt" fix as well. It didn't work, as well.
EDIT: Followed Thrillhaus's SK Performance Tweaking guide, got the java_vm correctly tweaked, the extra.txt thing works now and I don't crash anymore.
I am a windows 10 Steam user. For me, the game will go on fine for a little while then crash usually around the Harvester or the little bomb zombies.
So far, I have tried updating my drivers, verifying steam cache integrity, updating java, and Irthan's code.
For steam, Irthan, where do we put the code? I do not have a Spiral directory. I tried putting it under Spiral Knights, and JavaVR, but I just want to make sure I am putting the code in the right location.

In this thread, Thrillhaus lays everything out regarding tweaking the Java Virtual Machine. This leads to the setup of the extra.txt file in which you put the code. Take time to read it carefully.
I did the guide and put in Irthan's code, and it doesn't crash anymore!
Changing to 64 bit java fixed most of it for me, but if I follow the instructions for extra.txt, the game WON'T EVEN LAUNCH
A number of people, including myself, have also experienced horrible client lag in GP when visiting for the second time, and I only discovered why when I looked at the game log. The client is running out of memory. I fixed it for myself by putting the following in a file called
extras.txt
in thespiral/
directory to increase the amount of memory available to the Java VM:-Xms2g
-Xmx6g
-XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC
But I'm running a 16GB system with at least 8GB free at all times, so if your system has less RAM then you'll need to reduce the two values to suit.
And in all honesty, if your system barely meets the requirements for SK then I recommend not participating in SotA until GH has some time to perform a bit more optimization.
