Exactly what the titles says. Anyone know a fix?
I'm playing on steam, i've validated, reinstalled, updated java yet it still doesn't work!!!
Moving this to general discussion just to get more attention, it's really annoying this bug or whatever it is!
it'll probably be moved back but atleast it'll get more attention
java(tm) platform se binary has stopped working
One of my house computers has the same problem. I was worried I messed something up through SpiralSpy there, but I guess maybe a bug is going around....?
Drivers are at the latest version...........................................
It's funny cuz SK was literally working fine yesterday..
So I have been through the exact same problem... and I have one solution that worked for me.
Did you change your graphics card at all?
When I had the problem ONLY when I was in levels would it do that and close the game. I would then have to wait until my account timed out, others said my knight showed the d/c symbol, which was ~5 min before I could then log back in. In the haven, guild hall, and LD everything was fine. I had the NVIDIA Quadro K2000. I changed my graphics card (upgraded) and everything works fine now. It was something to do with the kind of processor the Quadro card had on it or something was what I found out. So sadly, if you want it to work well again, I would recommend going out and getting a different graphics card.
Try right-clicking on the app, "Properties", select the compatibility tab, and change compatibility mode to windows 8.
If you're running in Steam.. maybe try that on the Steam app itself? Quit and re-run obviously.
Just a suggestion after searching the web, I'm not having this problem myself.
Another idea would be to check your setup to see if anything updated since the other day, or if you plugged in any external device (cameras, gamepad, etc).
I have a friend whose screen goes black when they go fullscreen with their xbox controller plugged in. Might as well try all the things.
I have a MSI R9 380 4gb. game literally worked fine on Tuesday with no issues, i tried taking out my graphics card and putting it back in and no fix. I've got nothing external plugged in except for my headset. I've changed compatibility to windows 8 on steam, still didn't work. I've had this graphics card for almost a year now, never had this issue. Admin you sure it's not a bug?
Diagnosing problems is pretty difficult to do on a PC due to all hardware being different on every machine. If the problem isn't happening on every machine the software is on then it's not usually a software problem.
Has your computer updated at all in the past few days? If so you could try restoring it to a previous point using system restore. If you use the steam 32bit version of java you can try following Krakob's 64bit java installation guide. If you already use the 64bit version of java then you might try reverting back to the 32bit version, but it seems a reinstall didn't solve you problem before so I doubt 32bit java would fix it now.
If you haven't tried running Spiral Knights itself in compatibility mode you can try that out. Additionally you can try following the technical troubleshooting steps on the Spiral Knights Wiki.
Actually, this bug has been around for many years to me. I assumed that there is some Kind of flaw in handling resources if you play on PCs with not the newest Hardware/Software etc.
To me it happened a lot when i was playing on my win 7 Laptop (32). Some days more, some days less, some days without this bug.
Multiple people seem to be having this problem, with varying degrees on symptoms. Some say there's a black screen, then poofs away, while some don't even get any message or warning of any kind.
I tried getting back into SK, and I'm having this issue with OTHER GAMES as well (such as Salt & Sanctuary)... when I click the application on either standalone, browser, or Steam, I get no notice of it failing to work or anything. When I tried running capability mode for Windows 8 (or, uh, every single option I tried), it gives me the message:
"Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your computer?
Java SE Runtime Environment 8 Update 91"
Whenever I select Yes, it closes, and I see Java running in the background. Doing this multiple times adds... multiple Java SE's to run? It seems to be more computer related, but I could find no help online. (ノ°Д°)ノ︵ |
So installing another Java probably won't help if the game is using its own java. (There may be a java_vm directory somewhere under the game.)
Here are some crazy suggestions. I offer these suggestions only because you can't play now, so I figure you can't mess it up worse than that, right?
1) If you do have a java_vm directory for the game, try finding a "java.exe" and/or "javaw.exe" under there and making THAT windows 8 mode.
2) if that doesn't work... maybe try blowing away the java_vm directory? Assuming you have a java installed. Eek. If that doesn't work you may need to re-install the game.
3) Oh. Reinstall? Probably you've tried that.
So i did a system restore, did the trick. I pray this never happens again! o.o
Thanks again guys!
System Restore? But doesn't that remove, like, everything to even run anything? Whenever I try it, it says that it keeps files, but removes every single app I have...which, to say the least, is pretty bad. And I don't exactly have a backup. Any help with that? (Windows 10)
EDIT: Thanks Tablechair. :3 Still, since I had no backup beforehand...oh well.
I found this thing , which seems to address this issue for Windows 10, but... eh.
I was able to system restore to monday. So nothing really got deleted
To Sir-Henry-Cooldown,
A system restore does not affect files, what is meant by files is images, word documents, PDF files,...,etc. Programs are what System Restore affects.
Now a System Restore restores to a previously saved point, if you have not made such a point to restore to it will take you all the way back to a fresh install program wise.
It's recommended that you manually make a restore point before any major program (un)installation like drivers for example. That way you can revert back in case of an unexpected problem occurring like power off during installation.
As for the backup part, you don't really need a backup for programs, since you can simply download and install them again. Maybe you might want to backup your custom settings for them so you won't have to do them again. The things you should backup are the files that System Restore doesn't touch in the first place. Because there are no copies of them elsewhere since their are your personal files. Keep in mind the the reason of backup is not the System Restore though, it doesn't touch them at all. But for other reasons such as storage device failure.

A Tablechair
Likely what happened then was a bad windows update. If the problem happens again you may consider turning off windows updates, just keep in mind this leaves your computer open to any security vulnerabilities that current build has.
As for system restore... System restore affects programs and settings. Typically the reason for a restore is a program stops working, drivers are causing issues, or your computer itself seems to be dying due to messed up settings in the registry. System restore backtracks on these items to attempt to solve issues, so if java starts to freak out over a change to the computer (that is seemingly unrelated) then a restore can fix it.
Smack your pc some. You're welcome.
