Give cursed items an additional visual indicator

With every status, we have visual indicators that we are inflicted, and that we are affected. Poison leaves a bubble trail, shock has electricity flowing through us, and freeze leaves a big ol' chunk of ice at our feet to hinder movements.

Curse is the only status in the game to have a visual indicator (the eye above the head + aura) that isn't telling of the status. It alerts teammates that you are cursed, however it does nothing to help you as a player decipher what is cursed.

In the past, we had an icon on our weapon in our HUD that was similar to the icon that overtakes our consumables (vials, barriers, pills, etc) that alerted us that we would take damage from it. Since the UI update, that visual has been moved onto the weapon wheel, which is only present when you swap weapons.

Because of the weapon wheel's rather distracting nature, I have personally disabled it, and I'm sure many others have too. Because of this, it is impossible to tell what weapons are cursed.

While you can tell your shield health by shielding or looking at the shield bar, I would recommend something similar to be added to the curse status. Here are a few visual clues that could be added to the curse status to know when the current weapon is cursed:

  • Replace footprints with curse eyes
  • Like blooming aura or the grasping aura, when the player takes a step, the footstep dust is replaced with a small pink curse eye. This effect only takes place while a cursed weapon is held.

  • Have the curse eye be closed when an uncursed weapon is held
  • The curse eye opens when the held weapon is cursed, but if a weapon can be used without taking damage then the curse eye above the player will become closed.

  • Aura only appears when cursed item is held
  • The misty cursed aura only is visible on the player when a cursed weapon is held. It disappears when an uncursed weapon is held, but reappears the moment a weapon that is cursed is back in hand. The open eye remains above the player until curse wears off.

Any of these fixes will give a more obvious visual indicator to those of us who can't stand the weapon wheel, while at the same time not intruding on the usefulness of the weapon wheel.
Additionally, make the shield bar pink when shield bash is cursed. It stinks to bash out of danger when you can't attack only to die because your shield got inconveniently cursed without any way to know.

agree

Like you said, some players disable effects, like you disabled your weapon wheel, another nice addition should be implement a weapon hud again, like old hud did, its nice to look at your weapons stats time to time, i do that...

Shield bashing can also be cursed but is not always and has no way of displaying this information. Perhaps if the cursed symbol was shown over the shield?

Carbon based error!

The curse eye opens when the held weapon is cursed, but if a weapon can be used without taking damage then the curse eye above the player will become closed.

That sounds like the best solution. Maybe a slight color change, to make it even more clear.

Shield bashing can also be cursed but is not always and has no way of displaying this information. Perhaps if the cursed symbol was shown over the shield?

That's news.

yeah...

See I think making the shield bar pink would be a pretty easy way to tell if you've been cursed at a glance, since we always have a shield bar visible now. Having a curse symbol over the shield would work too... Maybe it would be better to give the subtle shield at your feet a curse eye overlay instead? Would be subtle but readable.

@Fangel It is possible to

@Fangel

It is possible to tell what item is cursed, but the method is highly impractical for battle (you are still correct, an indicator would be nice). If you open player-inspect it shows which weapon is cursed, but that requires you to idle, and be susceptible to attacks.

I think it isn't a huge issue since curse isn't too prominent, but making the weapon purple (and make shadow weapons uncursable) might work. Hopefully down the road1) What is this new product? Where is it used?
2) What is the first button for – the one on the main barrel (on the left)?
3) What is the second button for – the one on the 3.5mm connector (on the right)?it will be changed.

Any additional graphics implications would hurt an uneducated player even more, if they had no clue to tweak performance to remove your suggested aura trail lol.

And no, I don't think the game needs such game indicators for teammates. Cursed to me is a unique element of the game that strives for teammates to think critically and adjust game strategy on the fly, which the game lacks anyways. Though it might be likely a false design that was meant to be fixed, I see it as something that shouldn't be changed. As it should be seen as a test for crisis management skills into some panic extent (what will you do now that you are or see someone cursed?).

eh

I mean it's fine for you to have to make an adjustment, however there is a severe lack of information displayed to the cursed player themself. Having teammates know what you can and cannot use is just an additional benefit.

And the only "new" element that could potentially cause lag is the curse eye footprints, which shouldn't lag players any more than the grasping aura's footprints. Curse already gives you a small aura, just like literally every other status, so it's not too big of a deal.

UFSC is already laggy as is for some players even on low settings. Unless GH will better their graphics optimization by having an even lower setting that will compensate for substandard computer gaming rigs. We high graphic titans could watch our teammates cursed gracefully in the battlefield.

/e The weapon wheel is the only thing I could agree on. Simple fix is shrinking the icons or an option to remove icons and text only for wheel. Now that I think of it, it should be weapon slots on the UI similar to Pet/Vial instead of wheel (yee more clutter).

er

The same people who lag horribly in UFSC lag horribly in regular FSC... And probably everywhere else.

Due to the nature of curse, you don't want to be cursed that long. As such, on the rare occasions players are in UFSC, if they have laggy computers, they will be more attuned to avoiding curse at all costs. If they do get cursed however I'm sure they'll benefit from knowing what weapons of theirs are cursed.

Again, this is a subtle change to curse to make it more noticeable from looking at your character what the current status of curse is. The information (other than shield bash) does have a spot where it tells you what is cursed, but I find it distracting. I find the charge bar distracting as well but it's not as big of a deal.

Biggest change would be making shield bash curse visible. Change I want is being able to tell what stinking weapons of mine are cursed without losing focus because a wheel is dancing around my character.

Yeah yeah, we all think it's a good idea. I just think this game is far beyond from repair *cough* Java *cough*

Spiral Knights 2 coming in 2017...

ah

Well yeah, java optimizations have gotten seemingly worse over the years.

Doesn't mean the curse problem is any less prevalent and in need of a fix.

Hello Darkness, my Old Friend

I use the weapon wheel... *ahem* But I'm sure that closing eye thing would work.
