Are bombs actually good? Or am I using them for no reason?
A question
Bombs are decent, but aren't as good as guns (since the gunner update) or swords. So they aren't used as much because of that. And profile pictures are chosen in forum preferences. The link is where the "login to post" button was.

Yes, bombs are good, although it takes a while for players to realize that. I mean, I see a lot of veteran players using bombs really effectively, and I see few novice players using them at all. Here are the bombs you should consider first:
* Dark Briar Barrage: This is the fastest way to kill crowds of beasts, and the safest way to kill fiends. A recent thread asked what weapons we would choose, if we had to use a single loadout for the entire game. The only weapon that I definitely wanted in my loadout was DBB.
* Dark Retribution: Along with two other great items, this is a reward from Operation Crimson Hammer. It's kind of boring. All it does is steadily pump out huge amounts of damage.
* Haze-style bombs: These are the bombs that spread fire, shock, freeze, stun, or poison. Freeze is the most popular, because of Vanaduke, but it's ultimately the least useful, in my opinion. Stun is really under-appreciated.
* Nitronome: This bomb is really hard to use, because of its knockback. But there are times when that knockback is really useful. Such as the Unknown Passage.
* Vortex bombs: Having one of these in your party completely changes how you play the game.
In short:
the damage bombs are best used vs multiple enemies (in places like arenas), not really worth charging them up vs 1-2 monsters
haze bombs are vortexes can offer huge support
Haze bombing is the father of one of the fundamentals the game.
Which is kiting...
I was a bomber back in 2011. I was untouchable and constantly kited away.
I'd definitely recommend bombing, it's just not as easy as swords or guns until you reach about 4*. A blast bomb at 4* should be enough to solo most areas as long as you have enough CTR. The choice of armor is pretty important as well, unless you opt to go for CTR: High UVs on all your bombs which can be very expensive. Depending on your play style, i.e. support with haze/vortex bombs, damage with blast/shard bombs, etc. you should prioritize a different armor set, or mix different ones. Volcanic is probably the safest way to farm Vanaduke/FSC, and gives you CTR, Bombastic gives you Bomb Damage instead of CTR, which can be pretty good as well if you get UVs and/or trinkets, do realize it is not the best approach if you use only haze bombs. Mad bomber gives you both CTR and Bomb Damage, but also negative status resistances. This is the high risk, high reward approach to bombing, as you will kill things very fast, but will also die quite a bit easier. Being a bomber though, you should be able to kite pretty much everything besides maybe greavers, so it shouldn't be that much of a problem.
Using bombs as sidearms is generally not recommended, since you need to somehow acquire max CTR on it without any bonuses from armor.
A viable alternative which would also allow bombing as a secondary weapon, or if you also like keeping the option of other weapons open, is the Chaos set (cowl/cloak). This is pretty much Mad Bomber, but for all weapon types, not just bombs. I haven't used or seen this set in ages though, because most people specialize in one weapon type and don't need it, but it's still very good then. Please note that they may have changed it since I last saw it, if someone wants to call me out on that, please do, as I don't want to spread misinformation.
Ultimately the choice of weapon(s) is personal preference. In my opinion guns are for mechanically more adept players, whilst bombs are more strategy/reaction reliant. Swords are relatively boring in my opinion, because I feel they are a bit on the strong side, and, especially with auto target, require no special skill.
Bombing is not a special skill... It's a natural skill that is required by nature over time. Reactionary and strategic thinking is what a bomber is and the other two weapon class shares the same skill.
Sword has special skill due to the fact that it has switching mechanics which forcefully makes you inherit a skill that is abnormal to just the basic hack n' slash and charge, same goes for guns.
@Odinthefather I see your logic for swords being "Boring", although I disagree about it taking no skill, try soloing JK with only swords and you'll see what I mean, turn off autotarget as well.
If you're in Firestorm Citadel bomber is just needed.
So team up with bomber or be a bomber and team up with others
If you're in Firestorm Citadel bomber is just needed.
I never bring a bomb to FSC. But then I'm often solo, and I don't complete FSC as quickly as some parties do...
Most expert FSC parties use a vortex bomb to speed up the fights in the early levels, and then use only Blitz/Plague Needles in the Vanaduke fight. So, out of the 8-16 weapon slots that they have in their party, at most one of those slots is usefully filled with a bomb.
Bombs are great, but they're not especially great or necessary in FSC.
I don't see a lot of bombs going off in FSC. Then again, I haven't done FSC in a long time.
Bombs are fun, they give a new play style, they give a whole BUNCH of utility. In FSC the main bombs are Shivermist Buster and Electron Vortex. If you're going solo with only two slots, they aren't really needed as a Strike/Blitz needle are all you really need to take on Vanaduke. The bombs just make it go faster and easier, in fact, a Shivermist Buster just makes the Vanaduke fight trivial.
^Aside from being fun, you couldn't be more wrong.
Bombs slow down Vana, charging and freezing him is only necessary if you fail to recognize basic patterns. If the useless shivermist was a blitz instead, thats more dps, faster battle.
Glacius or Shivermist... I hate em lol. When I see someone in my party quiping or using it I tell them to put it away lol.
Only viable bombs for vana~ electron vortex and venom veiler. As Mechasnare said, freeze is a waste.
To be quite honest, I don't think you should be saying I'm out right wrong. In topics such as this, it's all opinion. The reason why I feel Shivermist makes the fight trivial (only in groups as I don't have space for it if I go solo) is because it keeps Vana in place and prevents him from rotating. Especially for new players, they can spam whatever they want without much threat. Also, newer players who are fighting Vana for the first time likely won't have a Strike or Blitz Needle unless they were preparing their entire playthrough just for Vanaduke. I know that having a full team of blitz needles and experienced players could shred Vanaduke in no time at all. I did say that with shivermist I think it's trivial, I never said it was faster. Take this all with a grain of salt, it's only my opinion after all.
Your post #12 is exactly right, except for one detail: You seem to say that Shivermist Buster makes the Vanaduke fight faster (not just easier for newbies). I don't speak for Lethal-Bunduru, but maybe this is the part of your post that set him off. Cheers.
Guess you're right, didn't bother to reread that before posting a second time, my apologies. Thanks Bopp.
@Bopp, Poothis
Don't mind me, I'm just an a-hole loner with no friends, that's why I post like that. But yeah, Bopp is right.
Bombs can be useful but for the most part they're out matched with a simple sword or better yet gun.
Bombs are AMAZING, but is hard to rush a stage with. With a sword or gun, you can break bricks quickly and more effectively.
Being a bomber is good, but don't forget to make 1 or 2 guns or swords too!
But the thing is that bomb's damage has been reduced, so guns and swords can pull out way more damage.
The only damage-producing bombs that I recommend is, like Bopp said, DBB and Nitrome.
DBB can easily take out masses of fiends (especially wolvers), and nitrome just makes life easier with the fast charge , good knock back and decent damage.
But I don't recommend the Dark Retribution too much, because gremlins have a super-ability to dodge them and somehow not be hit...
So I recommend making a shadow gun/sword, just to take out the gremlins.
it mostly depends on the bomb and what ur using it for. Like the shock bomb u get from RT grinding is VERY useful at 5* for lockdown if u have a chaos set and other things to lower its charge time.
Unless players have walker sets, and most of the ld veterans do, which makes haze bombs useless vs them.
Bomb are actually good if you use right set for them for example: If you have Bombastic Demo Helm and Suit 5* versions
You will have Damage bonus medium on each helmet and armor and Medium+medium = Very high that means instead of dealing normal damage
you deal Increased damage on any monsters than usual.
There are specific Sets of armors for Swords and Guns as well you can check them on Wiki: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/Main_Page
Also, how do I get a profile picture?
