Dear ThreeRings,
I've recently begun playing this game and I absolutely love it. I've even bought some CE despite my usual dislike for micro-transaction based games. I love the overall design and aesthetic and have fallen in love with the cute little Spiral Knights. I'm trying to get into some 3D animation and model creation and I was wondering what type of programs you used to create the knights. Since I couldn't find a similar post I thought I would just ask myself. I lurked around the program files and saw that the model formats were all unknown .dat and Java files. I've never used Java before, but I didn't think Java could be used as a basis for models. Is the engine all based off of Java? Is you model viewer and creator an in-house build, or something that can be imported into 3DSMax, Blender, or Maya? I would love to tinker with them and maybe make some cutesy animations for my own enjoyment. Any info or help on the subject would be appreciated, and I'm willing to cooperate with any privacy issues you may have.
I understand if you don't want to release any information to the public, especially if it's a in-house built system. I respect if you folks want to be tight-lipped about your development cycles and process and wouldn't want any discomfort in releasing any information. If you prefer to remain secretive about how you made this wonderful game, you only need to say so. Thank you so much for your time and consideration.
Best Wishes,
Evan Biddy

The client was made with the Lightweight Java Game Library. The model format looks custom, not something you could easily import and edit.
