I mean now that they're supposed be dropping from thwackers? Might as well say Pokemon has increased the odds of shiny legendary pokemon.

And are we still keeping track of item drops? I haven't had any since the 2013 update, and I'm clocking close to 6000 hours post game.

I'm just saying...

I found... someone who does

I do know of someone who does have it and I have a screenshot of it. But for the sake of the person and keeping things private, I won't upload it unless they say so even if it's for something as harmless as this.

I can see someone hiding one away.

Due to the fact that these forums don't exactly have every single player on them, it wouldn't surprise me if a nonforumer found one and kept it to themselves.

@Poothis
Is this someone you know? And are you sure it's a new shield and not one of the old ones?
If it was someone in haven you saw sporting one it's probably not a new one.

@Paintool
Item drops do still happen. I got a 2* skelly suit maybe half a year ago. They are very rare tho, so I don't expect anyone to find a df shield anytime soon. And that's fine imo, I really don't want it to be common enough to be farmed, even if it on average would take weeks of killing thwackers

I used to be an owner of one a long time ago.
Sadly I don't think the person it belongs to now plays anymore.

In particular we're interested in whether the darkfang thwackers do indeed drop them as was claimed a while ago, and whether it's possible to farm one or whether it is something you can only dream of.

How many players got Black Kat Helm? Book isn't so rare as you think.

@Grizzly

Behold, the power of basic mathematics.....if DS was at 1%, almost everyone would have a shield. The number of players * avg. Number of thwackers killed per player is obviously far more than 100. If you think on a large scale, 1% is not even remotely insane.

So based on empirical

So based on empirical evidence of the active players in this thread and observations made with in the game itself:

Nobody can prove to me that darkfang thwackers actually drop darkfang shields?

Do you see where I'm going with this? I mean I'm sure the gesture was nice (if it's true), and there still has to be some constraint made to preserve the rarity of pre-existing shields, but who does that really help if odds as far as we can guess are still (made up number) >0.001%?

There aren't enough players at any given time either that we know of running straight gremlin gates in Strats 4-6 on elite difficulty constantly everyday to prove otherwise; there's really still no incentive to farm for the 4* reskin shield when there's a better 5* shield and SSB than, like say, searching for black kats and BoDR that leads to ultimate power.

So again I'll reiterate:
Nobody can prove to me that darkfang thwackers actually drop darkfang shields?

right

Right. It appears that nobody has found a Darkfang Shield recently. Hence we can't really estimate the chances of finding one, except to estimate that they're very small.

As you point out, Darkfang Shield is a straight downgrade from Grey Owlite Shield, which is easy-to-get and popular. The only reason why people are interested in Darkfang Shield is its rarity. Presumably this is why its rarity has been so strenuously enforced.

Call me a dummy if I propose

Call me a dummy if I propose the question this way, but how do devs know an item drops in game anyway?

Do they just set the item in the drop table to 100% to make sure it's possible, then dial it down to microscopic odds?
How would they make sure it's possible after the fact and not bugged, like say when some enemies just don't drop loot or correct loot?
Also if I remember correctly the post just said thwackers in general, as if to include tier 1+2. Could I get a word of god that confirms they only drop in tier 3 darkfang thwackers?

inspect code, test code, set chances

In this case, I suspect that they located a piece of code or configuration that made the drop rate 0. Then they changed the drop rate to something else, like 1 shield per 100,000 thwackers. (I just made that number up.) Then they announced it as a game update.

They believe that the code works, because it should work (based on reading it) and it observably works in other situations with higher chances. But then there can always be errors.

Of course I can't answer your question about Tiers 1 and 2. Cheers.

You remembered a bit wrong. The post explicitly mentions that the shield rarely drops from darkfang thwackers.

My thoughts are that we have the original darkfang shield drop rate, however now we have more chances to get them (since it's not just boxes, it's an enemy). This does, however, have an issue since there are no good deconstruction zone levels to farm in tier 3, making it reliant on the arcade and RNG.

The good news is that darkfang shield hunting has much more validity to it now, however it will likely take equally as long to hunt them down as before.

Wouldn't the dlc or any of the t3 rank missions be a good place to farm? As far as I know it's not said anywhere that it has to the a dec zone.

not as easy

Tier 3 OCH may have some thwackers, however a good portion of the thwackers in the level come from bunkers - therefore, are respawning and don't drop anything. Additionally, OCH has the problem where most of the thwackers in the level are spread out.

Decon zones don't have either of these problems. The level is made up of mostly thwackers (probably over 30 of them).

Lastly, missions in tier 3 have no good place to find darkfang thwackers beyond the jigsaw valley missions, which have far more constructs than thwackers. All decon zones in tier 3 are either the second or third level in the set, fire themed, or both. Fire themed decon zones have scorchers, not thwackers, so it's a pretty difficult to find the shield dropping buggers.

I guess it all comes down to how rare it should be. Here's my rareness scale-

1.) Farmable, i.e. you trade tokens and will get it. Like the grasping aura.
2.) Common, i.e. everyone is capable of finding one. Like humbug hat was when it came out.
3.) Rare, i.e. it takes a great amount of time to find one, but it can be done. Like black kat cowl. Too rare to be casual.
4.) Beyond rare, i.e. multiple rare drops worth of finding things, like black kat raiment or grand solstice ring. Generally unfun.
5.) Unheard of, i.e. one player has zero hope of finding it alone, and the playerbase on the whole goes nuts. See darkfang.
6.) Not in the game, i.e. it is not available to players at all, like the banstick and other GM items

I'd like darkfang to be moved from "Unheard of" or "Not in the game", pending on whether it is (I think it is, since patch notes but it hasn't been proven..) to a tier like rare or common, that puts control of the item into individual hands.

Rarity

I think it's fine the way it is. It's not like they shield outclasses all other shields within it's class. As mentioned, they grey owlite shield is better and easier to get.

It's a collectors item, a neat addition for people who are willing to grind until they get one. Sure, if you actively go for it you're likely going to be dissapointed, but if you just so happen to find one, that's basically winning the RNG lottery in SK.
