I came in from Steam, specifically TF2, which is currently anticipating Meet the Medic - Valve has been trolling with hints of doves in TF2 maps and on the blog.
My question is, where the birds in Haven always there, or are they a recent addition?
Valve did a massive ARG with Portal 2 and hints dropped in various indie games, so I'm wondering if the doves in SK are some kind of recent addition/troll by Valve or if they've always been there

If you're talking about the helicopter-birds(Snipes, FYI)they've been there for a while, from the beginning, to my knowledge(i joined on april 14th).

yes, they've been in haven forever. haven would be lacking a lot of 'homely' feelings if they weren't there. also the GM's would be lacking disguises to snoop on people in haven.

And just to squash any further speculation by your part, nothing else in the game was added into the game with the Steam update except for the Steam costume helm. There's no ARG here.

The snipes have been there as long as I've been playing. I started shortly after the official release... so 2-3 months at least.
