I am not a expert when it comes to economics, but I have noticed how the price of CE have risen over the years (aka inflation). I have also noted that the value of CE (according to the trade tab) seem to be dictated by the lowest offer in the marketplace.

So I have been wondering: what would happen if I were to offer 100CE for 5K? Would the price of CE drop drastically?

What if I were to fill up all the offer slots with offers of that price range? Would the CE market 'crash'?

And if the prices of the current offers are dictated by players, why do they keep offering higher and higher prices?

As I said, I am no expert in economics, and this is my first post here on the forums after a few years of playing SK. I've tried searching for a similar post, but I'm not going to necro anything :V Please be kind; I am looking for a serious discussion :3

100 CE for 5k cr???

First you'd have to buy out the offers to buy ce. Maybe there are 1,000 offers to buy at 9.8K. You'd have to buy all of those before you could start selling at 5K. Bottom line is that you'd run out of energy long before you lowered the price drastically, unless you magically have a good million ce.

Why is energy so costly???

Grey Havens sets the prices as they wish. No, they don't sell the energy or set the prices directly by going in game and buying/selling energy, but if the price of CE is too high they step in and run some auction house sales or make guild halls that require massive amounts of crowns... or whatever. Similarly, if the price is too low according to them, they can just run a flash sales to remove energy very quickly. Ergo, the price of energy is exactly where it should be according to Grey Havens.

Why it is where it is is likely to make energy sales more palatable. I'd much rather buy energy and sell it for 12K cr than at 6K cr. On the other hand it's about finding a balance. The F2P complain whenever energy prices run away, so pushing that boundary is kind of a dangerous idea. Upsetting the proletariat is a scary idea. That was a joke. Laugh.

Well, that was a looooonng time ago I believe XD but i was just speaking theoretically.

I thought there were only the offers listed in the marketplace! Didn't know there were many others not listed...

Yeah it's a huge subject

Yeah it's a huge subject that's been discussed so many times, basically there's a things worth knowing:
- Individuals can't impact the price long term
- Market is kind of a snapshot of the crowns/energy availability/balance (whichever you wanna call it) which explains spikes such as the ones you'll notice during big Auction House goody sales or Flash sales.
- Grey Havens is truly in control of the prices as they may make decisions that directly impact the value of either crowns or energy. Say for instance permanently dropping the $ cost of energy 25% would reduce energy prices noticeably and durably. Good example of the uphill trend with energy prices is the "unbundling" of Promotion box rewards with energy packages.
Also energy prices is kind of the ultimate debate in SK.

CE

Spiral Knights is actually a self run economy. In the Supply depot you are able to BUY CE for real money.

Spiral knights has a limited amount of CE running through its whole system.
When someone buys CE with real money it increases the CE pool in Spiral Knights.
and when someone spends CE on stuff in Supply Depot the CE is deleted/erased there for the CE pool drops in spiral knights.

so simply put

more CE = cheaper prices
Less CE = inflation in prices

I hope it makes sense??
