I ended up joining the military after 2011 and left this game behind. What a fool I was. The community is still great even with new players. What should I look towards since my absence? I am still a Defender rank as well. I have 37k Energy now as well (used to be mist.)

Join a guild, make some friends, as Bopp said there are some new events that came out, some are fun and easy, while others can be a grind. I remember when I came back from a hiatus too, some of the changes were pretty cool. Welcome back and have fun.
Well, the pace of development has slowed dramatically since 2011 and 2012. So you can't expect much. For details read Release/all.
The big update was 2013-07-30, which completely revamped the economy. Mist energy was removed and the Forge was introduced. Also battle sprites and some other stuff like that.
Another update was 2014-12-03, which added and tweaked some gunner gear.
Edit: I didn't intend my post to sound negative. There have been enough events (Apocrea, Kataclysm, etc.) and small updates that I can't summarize them. Read Release/all. You should get back into the game, because the game is great.
