Hi! I'm a long time player from wayyy back after the beta release and I have sunk many hundreds of hours into this game and its awesome community over the years. As you all probably know though, things really started to stagnate last year and the community dropped like a rock off a cliff.

I have been following the game a little after it was picked up again by grey havens, but haven't really played all that much for the past year now, just the odd login here and there.

I was wondering if there any active communities around in spiral knights right now that wouldn't mind an old timer joining them, mostly to chat, but also for some pve and pvp if people are up for it ^^

Hopefully things are better now than they were, and if not then only time will tell.

There have been:

NO UPDATES

But

Spiral Knights may not be so dead after all

And

There is hope.

And in case you're wondering, in spite of a

New team the forging/weapon leveling system hasn't changed.

game is still alive and well. People still party up to delve into the clockworks. The game is still just as much fun as I remember it, from many years ago.

Sad

Its boring and dissapointed with the GH team.Promo after promo and no new content.Tell me how this path is different from Sega?
I love this game,i try to believe them and i played again and i persuaded many of my old guildmates to do so too and in the end we
are in the same spot.They did one update the iron guildhall that basically it was a smart move to save the guilds..The chess was not something that could make the game more intersting or extent the life of the game.I hope i am wrong and GH updates but i see only promos after promos..just sad.
For a new player is fun,kinda grinding in the 5 star wep heating but ok.For old players and people who reached end (1-3 months)boring.The game cant have sturdy playerbase..

Count your blessings...

1. The Slime Casino.

Is that not new free content to all players?

2. Guild Hall update.

There's the word "update" there, and its new free game content.

Give credit where its due. GH gave us something to enjoy. Hell, they even upped the Darkfang Shield drop rate, effectively re-introducing a new shield we can use, that was previously locked away behind impossible RNG wall.

Sure its not a new mission, or new weapon, but slow steady guys.

Azure are you serious

Azure are you serious man?
Tell me that you joking..
We understand the update differently..

Firstly,Slime casino its not in all times its like an event.Secondly you think a chess and a shield changes the game and will make someone comeback?
The game needs content man!And if they need to put gear at least add 5-10 weps not a shield.That shield is for collecting reasons more than anything else..

With that slow pace the existing players will bored and in the best situation they ll take a break of sk..
Sk lost a ton of players that loved the game and they were willing to stay and play.Sega didnt upload content and people lost their patience.
They dont have the luxury to go in slow pace if they want this game not be half dead but decent.And it has the possibilities to give more,else i wouldnt spend my time for it..

Dissapointing the playerbase and not making enough content will shorten its life.
And i think they can do many things without even do much work..

For example they let pvp die when they could improve.Just ld tier 3 usa now.All these years with the same krogmo rewards for all tiers too...how a newbie will start learning ld when he goes in ld t3 and get pwned like crazy?Tier 2 was a good introduction and it died cause no motive like all pvp modes.You see regular players to try more to organize events for pvp than Gms.If you are happy with those updates and you think sk is in a good path then i cant say anything else.I wish to be in wrong cause i dont care if I am right i care only for this game to be fun again..

Game's still fun

The game still has its charm and personality. If you're looking for a game with frequent updates (of a specific caliber. Game has been getting updates but most haven't been clockworks related), Spiral Knights simply won't be the game for you.

Should you enjoy the gameplay, collecting gear, socializing with players, and all that jazz, Spiral Knights remains an excellent choice for a way to spend your time. Servers will hiccup here and there but it's not unreasonable. We've still got a pretty tight-knit playerbase all around, and should you want to join back in at any point I'm sure you'll find a place for you!

Honestly, I don't think that weapons is the problem. Adding weapons just means 2 things. Players paying to get the stuff and/or tedious grinding. I am SICK AND TIRED of this game pretty much being a Grindfest or PayToWin. They don't need the swords bombs and guns. We have PLENTY of those. What i think this game needs is a new set of missions. That will give a new reason to play. What i suggest is quick planning. This game is dying. And seeing how many people are left... i think it is already dead. So here's what i suggest. This will be hard however but if GH wants this game to be worth the while then they need to try instead of doing their so called "Transfer Phase". I've seen them say "Were just not in the creative stage of the game yet..." SO many times. If they keep that up, this game will never be able to be revived so here. Ill give a few steps.

-Start brainstorming and make some new missions. I mean seriously. I have been left on a cliffhangar for too long now.

-In the meantime while everyone is doing those missions start making 1 or 2 new weapons to buy some time before people leave again. And i only mean 1 or 2. There is such thing as too much of something.

-Make some new events. Something that will give players a thing to look forward to and prepare for. By events i do NOT mean stuff like the golden slime casino. We could ALL live without that. It was just a little welcoming gift. Ive spent too many coins on those machines...

-Make events come out more often. This game is bland as heck right now. All there is to do is click the quit button and play another game or get some fresh air or if you still have hope, play the arcade and somehow make a profit off of recipes. Also dont make the events once or twice a year... Maybe after an event there will be a 1 or 2 week normal break phase.

So hopefully this helps. Imma go post it in the suggestions thread area where it seems like no GMs look at.

It might be ok for you to play over and over again but for the majority isnt.
And i know you ll answer something like this then play other game and not SK.
We would,if we thought that this game cant be better (and if we didnt love this game).
Its not a solution to whine about no progress but not a solution be happy with the current situation too..
I tried to be patient and wait months and months and i appeciate that at least they informed us but i dont know if they understood that
every month that passes people get more bored and in the end quit..

I hope i am wrong like i said again.Have fun!

Watching a game die has never been so fun.

It is the 3rd Millennium. For more than six years Spiral Knights has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of java. It is the foremost of MMO by the will of its players, and master of thousands of P2W players by the might of their inexhaustible wallets. It is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with shifting update schedules and radio silence. It is the Carrion Lord of the MMO scene for whom a thousand of hours of human lives are sacrificed every day, so that it may never truly die.

Yet even in its deathless state, SK continues its eternal vigilance. Mighty prize boxes cross the micro-transaction infested miasma of the internet, the only route between distant player bases, their way lit by paypal, the legal manifestation of the SK's will. Vast armies of fanboys give battle in SK's name on uncounted websites. Greatest amongst its soldiers are the GMs, the overpowered administrators, bio-engineered to only give the player base cheeky replies and little else. Their comrades in arms are legion: the data slaves and their countless research sheets, the ever vigilant newbies, and the fan artists, to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat from other better MMO games, their own self assurance, the need for more monetization - and worse.

To support Spiral Knights in such times is to spend untold thousands. It is to support the most hopeless cause imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the hope of new DLCs and gear updates, for so much has been canceled, never to be developed again. Forget the promise of cheaper crystal energy and caring about the fan base, for in the Grey Havens HQ there is only silence, prize boxes and timed events. There is no fun amongst the MMORPG, only an eternity of paying and grinding, and the laughter of former players who left SK to play better games.

Sorry GH

Midnight Dj is right except it can still be revived. If GH hasnt done anything and wont do anything though then what was the point of them buying this game? Naw, they've heard it all before. This thread is repeating the same complaint that has afflicted this game since 2012 (or maybe even 2011): It needs content. Three Rings knew this, and Grey Havens knows it.

it always comes back to the same issue its been the past 4 years.

people want content, but content doesnt appear with a snap of the devs fingers. you guys can make all the demands of what grey havens should be do it but you always neglect the factor that these things take time and manpower. in order to get more time and manpower, GH needs money! be pissed at them all you want, if they could make content fall from the sky im sure they would be.'

promos on the other hand, take neither time or manpower to make and they generate money. therefore, we get much more of them!

In order your promos to be

In order your promos to be successfull you need many players..
If playerbase is low and the existing players dont see new content why they would spend their money?
Maybe few of them might buy eitherway but i dont think it is enough..
And like i said before Gms can fix many things with not much manpower like doing pvp more exciting..
You see players organize 1vs1 tournaments and the Gms cant?
And not only Lockdown that was an example..
Promos will not revive the game they just buy a little more time and its ok to exist but its not a solution its a measure...

Levels?

Well, since I usually hear people complaining that the late game grind is obnoxious, why not try to make something that make it a bit more bearable? Sure, new missions would be nice, since the rewards could help quite a bit, but you play them once and are done with it. Instead, try to think of something that lasts?

For instance, how about adding another set of levels similar to shadow lairs. You know, high risk, high reward, only a bit more accessible. The main issue with leveling your new gear is that radians are a pain to get, right? In my case, and maybe for some other people, also advanced and elite orbs. (Eternal, not so much). Anyway, consider building some swarm themed arcade levels in the deepest depths of the clockworks.

Since enemies drop nothing, you would just place a ton of treasure boxes instead. Ergo, tons of rarities. If the levels are reasonably challenging for veterans and offer high rewards for high efforts, I feel like that could spice up the late game grind a bit, maybe keeping all those senior players interested for a while longer. In theory, that wouldn't even be that much work, right? Just recycle some levels, change the pallet, and who knows, maybe introduce a few new swarm enemies later along the line.

That would be my thought. no idea if it's good, but it makes sense to me.

honestly

A swarm-themed endless arena within the core with treasure box spawns after every boss wave would easily solve the late-game grinding problem, while also proving to be a fair challenge for new and old players alike and expand lore without compromising the story.

@Fangel

That would be perfect for the endgame grinding that's required these days... except that the prospect of an endless arena would be no doubt really difficult to achieve.

How would you program an arena map that would loop on itself indefinitely while:

A) Respawning all of the entities (treasure boxes, party buttons, enemy waves, etc) for every loop done;
B) Allowing players that have had enough grinding to leave without forcing the others to step on the elevator(s);
C) Making the map stable enough for Java to handle;

And this is assuming looping a map on itself indefinitely is even possible for Java in the first place.

Mind you I'm no programmer -- hell, I don't think I could create anything even remotely close to a program anyway -- but the way I see it, such an arena map would require new lines of coding to be made, if not completely overhauling already existing ones.

For what's it's worth, modifying the drop rates and/or placements of rarities for every clockworks depth would likely be a more cost-effective, albeit less inventive alternative for the devs to handle the end-game grinding problem... if said devs even think there's a problem in the first place.

Arena?

That's why I'd have stuck with additional arcade levels. I mean, the Shadow Lairs are basically only altered versions of existing boss maps, with some new set pieces to change them up a bit. Likewise, Shadow Arcade levels below the current cap (29+) would serve that same function, only that they shouldn't be locked away behind expensive keys that basically make the levels horribly inneficient to farm.

@Jedwell

Except that would also require the devs to create new lines of coding in order to create more floors over the 29th floor (and to also add rarity drop rates on those new floors, among other things), and as far as I'm concerned it'd also likely require overhauling some major lines as well, as everything that is related to the Core in some way has been adapted to the "29 floors" limit regardless of whether you are supposedly inside or outside the Core (hell, in the D&N mission the Core Entrance map from the Clockworks has been raised from the 29th floor to the 24th in order to accommodate for the following Inside Core maps).

somewhat.

In terms of an endless arena, you can have predetermined "waves". These waves get progressively harder with time, and are generated upon stepping on a party button in the middle of the arena.

After completing the fight, you would walk out of the room where treasure boxes have spawned. Treasure boxes can be spawned in, as evident by some of the puzzles in compounds spawning treasure boxes. These are spawned by a party button outside of the arena.

After collecting the loot, you are prompted to leave on the elevator to rest up in Haven (Euclid would be present, fighting off the swarm with you for a few waves before falling back to clear an exit for your squad). This would allow heat to be gained, and act as a general way to "end" the arena.

However, after collecting the loot, the original party button will reactivate, meaning you and your teammates can walk back in and fight off another cluster of waves of enemies.

There can be various variations of each wave, which are randomized each arena.

Blam, "endless" arena. Hazards can change as well, such as those ground spikes being active sometimes, and turrets other times, with even a swarm source in the middle for another one.

------

As for the "can't go beyond depth 29" thing, actually you can! That happens in shadow lairs, however it is represented as "depth ???" instead of an actual number.

@Fangel

Ok, that seems like a good workaround, so long as it's actually told somewhere that you can go back and press on the first Party Button to start it all over again.

But now I'm genuinely surprised; is there a way to confirm that some "???" floors actually go over the 29 floor limit?

Yup!

Damage values of weapons will change on ??? depths, just as they would on numbered depths. This means that you can "guestimate" what actual depth you're on depending on the linear damage functions. Additionally, loot type will change. At the end of a shadow lair in Firestorm Citadel, you will not see a single shining fire crystal since they stop dropping in stratum 6 (and shadow lairs technically are past stratum 6).

@Fangel

So what does that damage value "guestimate" of yours actually say about the ??? floors in Shadow Lairs?

Because honestly, Shining drop rates won't cut it as they also stop dropping before Stratum 4 (and FYI, they also do drop in Stratum 6).

I would need to run a shadow lair again

All weapons gain power in their respective strata, and lose damage after their strata passes (with an exception for 4*, which act as 5* weapons). Damage values will keep increasing until depth 28.

However, you will notice that the damage values in shadow lairs do not match up with the damage values of previous floors. This is a way to make the floors more difficult, as enemies keep getting more powerful but our weapons stop scaling with them. This is a pattern we can see in previous floors as well.

Well, at least I think that's how it works. I don't think our weapons get more powerful in shadow lairs, but the damage values are definitely not in-line with the arcade depths last I checked.

Shroud of the Apocrea

Actually, in the Shroud of the Apocrea event mission you can descent to depth 30. There are no "???", the last depth simply says "30". You can also check the gate map and it will show you the last level as if it was in the Core. That means you can fight actual monsters at depth 29, which usually is the Core Terminal. However, I don't know if the monsters are stronger or not.

I think we've failed to mention the somewhat constant soapboxing (whether it be in haven or on the forums) and bad netcode making actually playing Spiral Knights quite painful.

I don't care about new content, if Grey Havens fixes the servers so I don't end up with Australia-style latency lag all over the place (which is inexcusable since I'm in the same continent that the US servers are in) they'll win me back.

the best update they could do

the best update they could do is advertise to attract more players.

more players=more money
more money=more staff
more staff=faster and better updates

as a sidenote more players=energy prices will go down because it will have less value (which is a good thing because grinding for fire crystals or orbs won't be as painful.)

Pull ideas from other games?

Maybe we should begin looking outwards to other games and see what makes them successful. Now I know for a fact that there aren't many games like SK but I think we could pool some ideas here and there.

For instance: Starcraft II and its mutation missions!

Unlike prestige missions which are just same-old same-old, we could add different quirks into the missions such as: Swiftness Quirk (Makes all enemies and knights faster), Weapon randomizer (Self Explanatory), and Fireworks (When enemies die, they launch fireworks causing damage to everything around them). etc.

Another example: Robocraft and the brawl gamemode

Just like the gunner gamemode that GH had used before, a special gamemode is available that has special rules to change up the game

This is mostly me bringing random ideas to the table, but hey, it can work.

Also mentioning this before this thread gets moved there when people start to get into suggestion trains.
