Steam Overlay Broken

I'm not sure if this is a technical issue, or just a problem with my computer, but after playing Spiral Knights for a year, then taking a break, and then returning, the Steam Overlay is suddenly broken. It was working fine around five months ago, but now it refuses to open. I have checked the 'enable Steam Overlay' box in both the game and in Steam, so I'm sure that's not the problem. Uninstalling and reinstalling the game doesn't work either. If anyone could offer some suggestions, that would be great.
I run an early 2014 Macbook air, with a 1.4 GHz Intel Core i5 processor, and a Intel HD Graphics 5000 1536 MB graphics card, if that matters.
Its a known issue for steam overlay to not work with Mac's and there is no fix for it, best you can do if you want to make purchases is log into an alt and buy energy/promo packs thru the non steam account.
