If I have multiple items that are below level 10 does the heat gained during a level get divided among those items or does the same amount of heat apply to each item? In other words, if I want to upgrade a particular item more quickly am I better off just equipping that one item?

Heat is divided. Hence, you can level items faster if you do so one at a time.
