How come some people seem to be ashamed of paying for their gear/accessories and/or having amazing ping? Seems like when most players are confronted with the question, they try so hard to dodge it like the plague, like it's a sin to have either. Both are great things, so it's kind of puzzling. For the sake of comparison, it's like being ashamed that you went out to eat a fancy dinner the other night or that you bought an extra pair of shoes last weekend. For ping, it's like being born into a rich family and being afraid that people are going to find out. Just doesn't make much sense to me. What's the difference here? Why deny it or be scared to admit it?
How come people are ashamed of paying to play or having good ping?
In a F2P game it's typically a theme to try to get everything without paying a cent. It's a lot better for the game experience to not pay to progress, however there's nothing to say sorry for - you're playing the game under the F2P model and deciding your time is worth more.
So when someone has worked for years to get amazing gear, seeing someone who's 3 days in with the same gear seems like a slap to the face. Granted, those years of experience will show much more than a 3 day-old vanguard. It can be a mixture of envy (I don't have that and I want it) and "ruining the experience" (half the fun of the game is grinding and meeting people! why would you avoid doing those to get better at the game?!) for themselves.
As for ping, that's a bit of an awkward game. People with high ping have to deal with a lot more, and thus, are unable to approach the game in the same way a low ping player would. You can have the exact same skill level as someone else and they will always outperform you due to a circumstance that is beyond both of your control. This isn't usually a problem until competition shows its face, and equal skilled players are thrown against each other but one side has a massive handicap.
When not in a competitive environment, you'll find the same people with low ping will say "oh just get better". Despite this, they don't have to worry about dodging projectiles that are behind them. I've seen a player with low ping complain about lag (normally 20 ping, they were "so laggy" at 70 ping) meanwhile I'm sitting around at 90 minimum. There are even more players around the world who never get more than 180 ping.
I think what happens there is a player with good ping doesn't understand the struggle of having high ping until they are forced to experience it themselves. Thing is, the only place they experience it is on the other "server", meaning they'd have to play regularly and exclusively on the EU server (if they are US east coast) to even remotely understand that you can't simply "get better" when the limiting factor isn't you.

So basically, it's a separating method that kinda stinks but isn't unheard of. :|
Spiral Knights is actually a communism and people are afraid that if they talk about how they pay and have good ping, Grey Havens will come and take their ping and payments away so that others can pay and have slightly better ping. That's why we experience sudden frame drops and can't pay more than a few hundred dollars every month.
I understand the reasoning from an outsider's point of view. People envy others who are better/have better things than them. Jealousy is just in our nature as humans. However, what I'm curious about is why the people who do these things (buying gear and having godly ping) are ashamed. I personally have spent quite a large sum of money on SK over the years; thousands. When people ask me, I tell them and I'm proud. I work hard for the money I make so I don't feel as though I should be ashamed for using my hard earned dinero on something I enjoy. That said, a lot of players don't share this sentiment. They pretend to be F2P players on the surface but in PMs and other private discussions they admit to being P2Pers. It's very bizarre. I suppose this question was more directed towards this demographic of players rather than outsiders who haven't spent a dime.
P2P is seen as bad because people don't value those who seek instant gratification...obviously. They value hard work and patience, none of which applies to a P2P player (in their eyes).
In reality, P2P is not bad. Support GH, save yourself time, win win.
Being P2P and hiding behind the veil of F2P is pathetic though. These people are your sheep, mortally afraid of the real world. They will sissyfoot around any problem they encounter instead of facing it head on. Be happy you don't live this pathetic existence.
As far as my history of looking at things goes, ""rich"", loosely speaking, seems to usually correlate somewhere along the lines of "stuck-up, pompous arrogance," as far as I see it. Obviously not saying that I find them bad people, but I'm sure a fair share of people would say otherwise... It also tends to correlate with being lazy to an extent.
Then there's also potentially others that are just looking to defend the idea of their pride. "I worked for this," I suppose. That's speculation though, so I guess I wouldn't really know, so ignore the point I guess.
As for ping, my personal theory as someone who's constantly self-conscious to the point of almost always soloing in basically every MMO (completely ruining the purpose of the MM in MMO) would probably be whether you find yourself good at the game or not. I mean, wouldn't it kind of feel a bit better pride-wise for you to be bad at the game because of your ping, or be bad at the game because you're actually bad?
