Hello, im a old spiralknights player, i love this game, and i think it is still the best game of this genre. But this game probably it may soon be forgotten, and its sad, because its a little piece of art.
And if we help the devloper? Maybe the grey havens team cant work so mutch at the game but if it will become a open source game, the spiral knights fans can be contribute devlopping always conttolled by the grayhavens team (to not lose the suol and the stile of the game).

You think it would be a good idea?

PS: i thought this because i am a 3D modeller and if spiral knights were open source... I would certanly happy to contribute for free for a beatiful game like that.
(Sorry for the bad english, im a italian player, i dont speak very well, i hope its all clear)

We've asked them and they don't want our help. I even made a set of new eye types and they ignored it. For whatever reason it's their ordeal and their ordeal alone. Really it's kind of sad, since the community has A LOT to offer.... a good example being the Binding of Isaac's modding. It's been 2 months of modding for that and they've already started adding stuff to the base game and releasing updates on time. They were faster at content production (on their 2D, much easier developed, much more funded) game than we were, but now they're lightening.

at the risk of sounding mean

One issue is that bad developers can be worse than no developers. They can damage your code base. You can always revert to an earlier version, but by that time they might have tricked you into wasting a bunch of your time. For a community developer to be taken seriously, they would have to be good: technical skills, design skills, people skills, careful attention to detail, etc.

And I don't want to come across as mean, and your English is much better than my Italian, but your posts in this thread do not display careful attention to detail. Spend a little more time to make sure that you're marketing yourself well. :)

Savage Bopp strikes again!

This is VERY true... but what I will say is how Binding of Isaac got around this- you don't *just* add whatever, let ANYONE add anything... rather, you take a month. You look through what people have made. You see if it's any good, well commented, popular with people, a decent addition. Then, instead of just adding it directly, you reformat it, look through it and add it.

Yes, this takes time.. but guess what? Binding of Isaac just got an update in only 2 months of the developers barely touching it and we didn't, and that's what I see in this.

yeah

Another factor is the fact that Spiral Knights is a game that's Free to Play. Making Spiral Knights open source damages the payment model the game is built around. One small change and someone can give themselves an easy way to get loads of money, and simply claim it was an exploit/bug when confronted about it.

While I would love more content as much as the next person, the most feasible method would be expanding the actual Grey Havens team. This means more people working real jobs. Unless we see a huge explosion of player activity, I doubt we'll see the team expand.

However, one thing to think about is how popular Nick's new game, Slime Rancher, has become. I'm sure that if a large-scale content update were to come out for Spiral Knights, having Nick, Ian, or any of the old team that moved on to Monami Park mentioning it on social media would be a great promotion.
... Heck, some sort of slime rancher cross promotion would be pretty grand. The TF2 promotion brought a lot of players in...

Not to be a negative nancy,

Not to be a negative nancy, but Grey Havens is a LLC (limited liability company.) Im under the impression that their main goal is to keep the game alive as long as possible (IE meaning more boxes which they get money for/ or energy at the expense of "Content".) By content i mean they try to keep the game afloat at the expense of very little "content" to none at all (pretty sure we can all agree prize boxes dont count as content "reskins/Clones" unless its the aforementioned p2w gun "mixmaster.) As of late the content argument has been "at least were getting something", and that is true we arnt entitled to any content at all, but as of late the only REAL content to the base game has been the slime casino. The iron guild hall with its chess is at most a mini game which questions "why not play real chess and save that 5$?", or go play the chess at a whales guild hall who has those pieces already? The recent icebox and lockdown events were a nice touch for people who are into pvp, but again this isn't the base game, some were even disappointment to find out that wasn't an actual map in the arcade. This furthered by the neglect of blast network, a other option for people who don't enjoy getting mowed down by UV clad, Hazebombs, and mixmasters lines, as well as the same sets being run with little variety.

However It probably wouldn't matter much anyways, just look at the steam player count, and yes i know this isnt including the games standalone client of korogate/armorgames if those even work anymore(Thanks google chrome.) A lot of players on steam just come for the tf2 hat and uninstall (same thing happens to Super Monday Night Combat and look where their at), countless pages of steam forum questions unanswered, trolling comments, constantly posting is it dead yet, and the less said about the comments on the promo pages the better(Yikes.)
The worst yet is the people selling steam items/csgo skins/tf2 items anything that can be traded for spiral knights items / crowns. Now you might think that its hard to do so but to an end game player that grinds vana day in day out, they could afford to trade their crowns / mats in for a steam gift from the user and they make real life profit. Sure merchants and whales sink huge amounts of dough on this game to resell things, but even they soon will lose their riches and it will mean nothing. Yes despite what valve / steam says you can turn in steam items / wallet for real money via websites of third party, and get your money back. This leaves the question that they are the only ones getting something out of this, keep in mind we arnt entitled neither are GH, since its a sunk cost, we enjoy the game til it dies, we lose all our items we spent precious amounts of money on, GH moves on, and the only ones who got something were the people who traded in the in game currency for steam products. Only other example would be people having the items appear on their steam inventory to reflect on their memories of the game.

You're probably wondering where i'm going to this with the conversation at hand, and i suggest the steam workshop, even thought thats been suggested it probably wont happen, with all the either low quality submissions to happen. Whats scaring me the most is how the game can barely if at all stick with any players new, or old. I cant even pay people to play this game with me (I asked a friend to try to help me get the steam knight mask, a steam only promo, and offered to buy that new nier game, they still refused.) If they don't want help and just want to keep the game afloat until the inevitable doomsday, that's fine, because people who want to come in and play, etc can come and play and wont be greeted by a dead game with no servers available.

yes, maybe its true, its a bad idea.

Yes, probably the "keep going until it can" its the only possible way. Maybe grayhavens team keep alive this game for a long time, without so mutch update, but probably still in the fans the dream of helping ahaha probably beacuse the larger group of player its veteran player, play this game because they paly it for a long time and love it, i think is normal to wont to help in this cases. But is true probably its not the politic of the society. and maybe the help can be an harm (although I think that eventually we would earn more time of life for the game).

good morning and thanks for the replies
