I know it's used in a lot of games and it's probably been suggested thousands of times at this point, but in my opinion it would be very cool to be able to select a class when you make your character, which would give you certain bonuses for certain weapon types, as well as bonus abilities. It would really give you a reason to use different weapon types more than others, as most players I see use mainly swords, and not very many people use bombs. I'm currently using a Gunslinger character, which only uses guns, even though I'd almost always choose to use only swords, but so far it's actually been pretty fun. But enough about me, here are some ideas for classes;
Of course, the classes would be based on the 3 main weapon types, and have an ability based on their weapon. Here are my ideas:
Swordsman
The Swordsman specializes in melee combat, gaining the following bonuses
Sword Damage: Medium
Sword Attack Speed: Low
Sword Charge Rate: Low
Ability:
Sword Frenzy: The Swordsman fills up a bar by damaging enemies. When it is full, you press a certain button to activate Sword Frenzy, during which you get a damage bonus, and killing enemies gives you a stack of Bloodlust, and you increase the duration of the ability by 1 second. When the ability ends, you get health based on how many stacks of Bloodlust you gained during the ability, about 5% of your health per stack. This ability has a base duration of 10 seconds.
Gunslinger
The Gunslinger specializes in medium and long range combat, gaining the following bonuses
Gun Damage: Medium
Gun Attack Speed: Low
Gun Charge Rate: Low
Ability:
Showdown: The Gunslinger fills up a bar by shooting enemies. When it is full, you press a certain button to activate Semi-Auto, during which you have infinite clip size, and gain a maximum increase to Gun Attack Speed. When it is over, your clip is empty (Even if you didn't shoot at all during your ability), and you must reload. This ability lasts 10 seconds.
Bomber
The Bomber specializes in, well, bombs! The Bomber gains the following bonuses
Bomb Damage: Medium
Bomb Charge Rate: Medium
When the Bomber does a basic attack, it places a smaller bomb which does 50% less damage than a fully charged bomb.
Ability:
Short Fuse: The Bomber fills up a bar by placing bombs. When it is full, you press a certain button to activate Short Fuse, during which, the Bomber gains massively increased movement speed, and basic attacks will instantly place fully charged bombs, which only explode once the ability ends. This ability lasts 10 seconds.
What you're asking for is what class armor is for. Bomber sets allow for bombers to perform better, wolver sets for swordies, and gunslinger sets for gunners. The game is all about collecting a lot of gear types and not being limited to one style of play.
More class options would be nice, along with a nerf to glass cannon sets (chaos/black kat) would allow for more "class" play.
As it stands we already choose our player class by the gear we craft and the sprite we choose. Seeing as it's a huge component of the game to craft a wide variety of gear, giving large incentives to stick to one playstyle isn't sticking to a core value.
However, having "set bonuses" that give additional stats depending on your helmet, armor, shield, and weapon would be cool - IE, give a full snarbolax set (snarbolax armor, helm, barbarous thorn shield, barbarous thorn blade) an attack speed and movement speed increase of medium on the barbarous thorn blade. Having a large number of those kinds of bonuses for players to discover would be amazing and really encourage making several sets for any occasion.
