Myself somewhat included.
Well now it's happened. Now would be an excellent time to put our money where our mouths are and whale a bit for the sleep update, perhaps. You know, show them that making content makes them money as well?

Yea seriously, thank you gremlin engineer, if you are reading this. I've put in a good hundred bucks JUST for this update.
they need more content to make me come back after something like 4 years of prize boxes
hopefully someone can correct me on that its been so long i didn't bother keeping count
and maybe if they make the game less dead
About four years ago (2013-07-30 to be exact) we got the giant update with battle sprites, economic changes, etc. Since then we've gotten new end-game missions, gunner update, and now the sleep update. That's not a lot of content for four years, I agree. But it's more than just prize boxes.
If they want more money they should put out more DLC's they unlike boxes are worth the cost
Now that I'm playing again I'm down to throw $20 per paycheck, minimum. :3
"they need more content to make me come back after something like 4 years of prize boxes"
And you need to come back for them to make more content. What a terrible conundrum you could help solve by staying and playing the game, even if just an hour or two a week on a Tuesday afternoon what a lovely time mmm yes.
"That's not a lot of content for four years"
I don't think we should look at it that way. We saw Nick leave, the subsequent firing of the team responsible for SK, Sega not replace them, the game get sold, the game get purchased and transitioned, and most recently the "gremlin engineer".
Rather we should look at what's happened recently. New lockdown maps and hazards, which are content as well as the sleep update, which is content. The engine is starting back up again. It might stop but if we support it it might not.
It's easy to be cynical and say that the game is going down and then go play Overwatch. You know who you are. It's hard to stick with the game and better yet, try to do something about it.
"If they want more money they should put out more DLCs they unlike boxes are worth the cost"
I think that's a fallacy as not everyone can (or wants to immediately) afford to pay for DLCs and so DLCs divide the playbase into paying and free which is generally a bad thing. The beauty of prize boxes is that most of the content is kept free but the people who pay still get some form of reward. If anything we should make OCH free of charge and maneuver the unlocks from it about in some manner.
I love all the new stuff. It is true this is the first PvE content update outside of the slime casino, but that's because the clockworks really need a fine balance to not completely ruin the economy (take a look at spark of life drops right after the battle sprite update), but PvP and costumes are pretty easy to introduce, balance, or alter on a whim.
For example, take a look at the new gear. They require rather large amounts of zee cores for all of them - however, zee cores are rather abundant in starlight cradle levels and it isn't too unfair to the player. It would only cost 6 zee cores under the old methods, and if they didn't drop frequently then players wouldn't feel obligated to seek out the levels. It's a pretty fine balance that's easy to overlook when the only part that affects you as a player is whether or not you have new toys and enemies to play with.
New missions also requires new storytelling and potentially new scenario rooms built. New PvE levels need a story background, even if it's weak, along with general themes not explored yet. I think a gremlin/devilite level in an office space would work great, for example, as devilites are confirmed to do office work for gremlins.
This also goes to show that new playable content isn't limited by promotional boxes. If you want to support server upkeep and the staff who keep the game running then it's never a bad idea to throw money at the game. :)
(DLC has the same limitations as new PvE content. While limited I do think it would be a better way to introduce new weapons and armor that need to be kept rare, such as the mixmaster.)
"a pretty fine balance"
I was thinking about that, actually. Right now players like me have relatively zero zee cores and demand quite a few... but players that play the arcade frequently are going to get A LOT of them, because that's just what happens... and since most of them won't craft the sleep bomb/armors (they're certainly not what I'd recommend starting out and are more of a tech) then we're going to see inflation of zees and eventually them becoming worthless.
The balance of them however, is rather perfect for players that don't buy them from others, like you said. Perhaps the best solution to materials would be to have them come bound, and then to provide a larger sink for them beyond just battle sprites. Deep thoughts with Fehzor.
"This also goes to show that new playable content isn't limited by promotional boxes."
I was actually thinking the opposite- the jewel prize boxes are truly freebees, which meant that the gremlin engineer working on the game could actually work on the game rather than the prize boxes. The new armor texture/design and especially the beauty that is Amputator's model all took a good deal of effort that may well have been a prize box. Prior to this we saw less update out of said gremlin engineer- rainbow effects are EPIC and take time to make and I can appreciate that, but at the cost of whatever else may have happened.
Regardless I don't think either of us can more than speculate on what goes on. If it is the case that there is an art team then prize boxes may very well be "free" in terms of dev time, but with Ian out of the picture it's hard to say.
I wonder if there is any way the Devs can do some sort of Patreon Page! So we can support them directly! I'm already bought some CE. But...I don't know, kinda want to see something like a progress bar, like:
Post 1: Hey guys we need X much till we can hire a Designer to help out the team, and in doing so content is coming!
Post 2: Hey guys progress are being worked on the new missions! Just make sure you get your shadow weapons ready!
Post 3: Since we are getting some $ into our Devs what are some bugs/glitches do you want to work in the mean time!
Post 4: Looks like the Update is going to take some more time! But we fix the RAM Leaks! So rejoice! Half off supply Depot Sale!
You know, something like that. I know they can do it here...Maybe I'm just asking for more replies from them for whatever thing they fix/update with. And that might be too much to ask. Maybe add a new section to the Forums for GM Updates only. Not really announcements wise, but more like here is what's going on...You know its kinda hard to explain
Holy heck, I'd definitely throw money at a monthly Patreon.
The Grey Havens team has already answered a lot of those questions back in September of 2016.
"If it is the case that there is an art team then prize boxes may very well be "free" in terms of dev time"
"[W]e are a small yet very capable crew dedicated to our games. We’re familiar faces who hope to keep the ship sailing for years to come. Our crew does include artists, developers, and GMs. We prefer to speak through our games and thus will not be offering a comprehensive list of our staff members, our company structure, details about our offices, or similar information."
As for crowdfunding... Grey Havens already has two games out there with methods of making money through official channels. For independent creators, Patreon, GoFundMe, and other such methods, that's the only way for them to make money. For an established creator, developer, etc... That's less mandatory, especially after over a decade of running games.
But that all said and done, continue to mention how you do want more communication! They hear us and, while it can be hard sometimes, they'll try to swoop in whenever.
I intend to buy a few promos to help Grey Havens keep the game running, but I don't like these Emerald boxes... '~'
If you're looking for ways to support the game because you like what they're doing (ie voting with your wallet) then energy purchases are never a bad idea. I typically buy boxes to support along with purchasing them because I like them - if I don't like the box itself I usually will either hold off for then, typically because of money flow, or throw some for energy instead.
Im just glad to pass on through and be surprised that there was an update to one of my most beloved games that ive ignored for years.
Also, really happy to still remember some of you forum veterans.
This is literally what I wanted them to do with their first update, thank you so much GH for putting sleep back into the game. And I would like to add, HYYYYYYYYYYYYPPPPPPPPPPPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
