Getting a friend on Steam to install the game, buy the Iron Wolf and Gold Wolf stuff on the Steam Market, unpack them and trade them to me in-game, so I can sell them on the Auction House.
Is this illegal?

don't see how
I don't know much about Steam, but I don't see how your first proposal would be illegal. Lots of players use Steam, specifically so that they can trade on the Steam Market. And once those items enter Spiral Knights, why would there be anything illegal about trading them? You're not breaking any rules or circumventing any game mechanisms, right?
I don't see how mailing items from one knight to another could possibly be illegal. I have done it many times.
By the way, giving another player access to your account is illegal. Don't give them your password, and don't sign in and then let them play your knights. But you're not doing that, right?
Also wondering about mailing items from one of my Knights to my other one.
