I've been gone for a few years and recently came back to the game. I was wondering though where the discussion on the splitting of prize boxes and energy purchases is if anyone has the link handy?
Thread discussion on the splitting of boxes and energy purchases?
Oh? Was there no single discussion as to why either OOO or GH had split the purchase of energy and prize boxes? So that now Prize boxes do not come with energy purchases but rather, are a separate purchase themselves?
Everything in this game, about which a player can get upset, has 10s of threads. The big topics (Radiant rarity, gear balance, energy prices before 2013-07-30) have 100s of threads.
You might try searching Google for something like "promo box energy purchase site:forums.spiralknights.com" (without the quotation marks) to find the thread of which you're thinking. Good luck.
Ahhh thank for that Bopp I did a quick read of the top results for that search. Just surprised nothing was said on the side of the devs in regards to their decisions :/ Would have been nice but oh well.. Been gone a few too many years to be bringing this up now hahah cheers dude.
They actually released a survey sometime in either 2012 or 2013(I could be off by a year or two still), and one of the questions in there related to prize boxes. Apparently, a majority of players wanted standalone boxes because we've gotten standalone boxes exclusively (except for the spiraltail promo) since then.
Personally I'd like a mix of the two, and I was one of the players who voted in favor of standalone boxes. It brings prices down, makes supplies go up, and I get top open several boxes instead of just 2. But it stinks when the box's prize is essentially a bonus rather than an item (see: UV tickets).

I always felt something is off about that statement... if most people here would consent that prize boxes should be a bonus after the energy purchase, then who the hell voted for the opposite? I mean, why haven't they come to forum and defended their views yet? There was no huge praise for such move from the player base for as far as I could recall.
It is almost as if OOO back then was trying to justify a bad business decision by saying, 'well, you guys voted for it.' Because I personally never recall such survey, even if I did, the last thing I want is a bundle of RNG boxes that contains items worth far less than the money I purchased it with. And hope once in a blue moon a 1% item will drop and make me rich in game, but I can just sell purchased energy, that is a far more reliable alternative.
Something doesn't add up here...
*puts on tinfoil hat*
@Midnight-Conspiracist lol I agree with you on that :/ I was playing around that time but don't remember the survey :( That's actually the main reason that prevented me from purchasing boxes when I got back into the game.. I don't want to spend essentially 30 NZD or 6NZD per box to get some bolted vee or equivalent and not make any in game money from how much irl money I spend.. That was what was nice about prize boxes coming with energy purchases.. Even if I get nothing good I still have some ce. During events as well, it incentivised players to buy energy and in turn drop its value so that it can be affordable for even f2p in game.. Now with energy prices hitting 10kcr... and prize boxes still being relatively expensive.. I see no real reason to buy any :/
Did a bit of searching. Here's the survey in question. It was a gear survey but I distinctly remember there being questions about the prize box distribution in it. Looking at the date, the stand-alone boxes became the standard soon after, and I distinctly remember a question in the survey asking about what method players would prefer.
As someone who does buy prize boxes for their contents, I would much rather spend $20 and get 5 items than spend $20 and get 2 items. The standalone boxes lower the prices of the cosmetics significantly, settling around 30-90k per piece, while prior almost any piece would cost 150k at minimum.
For boxes with a large amount of items in them, I prefer the standalone boxes. For boxes with not enough variety in them, I prefer energy bundled boxes.
Also I realized after the fact I got my words wrong above - spiraltail was a standalone box. Spiralhorn was the energy bundle one. Personally I'd love to see a few smaller scale promos with energy bundles but keep the big ticket ones to standalone boxes.
if anyone has the link handy?
There have been so many threads about how prize boxes work, and how they compare to energy purchases, that I don't know which one you mean. Maybe you could be more specific?
