A few days ago I made a post about me forgetting my e-mail adress which is used for pasword resetting etc. Some people were very helpful and told me to contact support and gave me some question examples which they could ask. I did send them an e-mail and I waited paitently for 3 days after which they responded saying that they can't verify the ownership unless I made any purchase for the game, which of course, I didn't do. This is just stupid. Supports from other games can find plethora of questions, and they are telling me that the only way of verifying ownership is through purchases? Give me a break. It has been a pleasure playing Spiral Knighs and being a member of the community for years back. I hope the game stays alive and that new players make their way to this game, but for now, goodbye Spiral Knights.
Account help UPDATE
Well, now that you said that an e-mail adress is public, why can't they just tell me the adress used for creating the account. If I am the owner, I would probably remember the password for it.
Think about it this way:
The world isn't full of nice people. People with mailcious intent are out there. GH is protecting that info. It is nothing personal.
If you are able to log in to the forums to post though, just click "My Account" (top of the page). It should show your email address.
I would assume this is a new account since logging into the forums requires login information. The reason I said emails are public is because many people have emails that are easily accessible for actual reasons. People have emails on their websites for example, as such saying you know the email but not the password for the email won't get you very far.
Since it sounds like you've forgotten the actual email you used, you could request for them to give you the email, but usually support for anything won't give a full string. They may be able to give you the first few letters of the email and perhaps the service it's at (using your username as an example, they might be able to say "the account on record is omn******@gmail.com", and perhaps it would spark some sort of remembering from there. Doesn't hurt to ask), but at the same time they will want to protect the email as a whole as to not allow someone to attempt to hack it.
A lot of what they can do to help you banks on knowledge that only you should know, combined with any interactions you had with them that they should know. Zero interactions and forgetting old info sadly cannot be fixed.
My problem is that you have to PURCHASE something. It's like they're holding your email and account hostage just like criminals. Sure there is other ways to get it back but if GH is your best bet then you're screwed. How about GH makes a thing where if you request it then you can "Buy" 0 energy for free. It would show them that you technically bought something without having to pay a kind of like ransom for it.
@Fallen
Whoa there, slow down with the accusations, your ignorance is showing. Your terrible suggestion compounds this....you can't charge your credit card for $0.
A better suggestion for account recovery would be to implement security questions (standard account recovery and verification). I actually like how GH handled this situation, it shows they take security seriously. Unfortunately, there are always people who blame others for their failures.
Its just a thought. I came up with the idea of 0$ in like 2 seconds dont act like thats the best i could do. I do think the account recovery thing is a good idea but like dont go on all like "Your suggestion is terrible" i find it ironic how youre defending GH yet breaking their own rules. Dont go around attacking me. Im not saying they ARE criminals im saying thats something that some scammer would do.
http://imgur.com/a/UQhy1 you could consider this hypocritical of me but im not going like "Ay GH u guys are idiots" im saying "Can you not do something that a scammer would do after they take your personal info?"
Straight up calling Grey Havens "criminals" for you not having your account information is over the reasonable line. It's not "insulting", per-say, but it does go to show a lack of understanding of cyber security.
A good portion of players that do not make purchases on their accounts do not own credit/debit cards in the first place. Even if you could, charging $0 has no use without a card.
Additionally, the whole "you should have a pay $0 thing" already exists, it's called contacting support. Knowing your support interactions can be helpful, so if you contact support with a simple silly phrase you can essentially use that as a "security question" should you ever lose your account in the future. Just try not to clog up their system with those - one interaction should be enough as long as you remember it.
I never straight up called them criminals i simply compared something they're doing to something a criminal would do. Try to read instead of skim my posts.
If that's true then a good portion of players are screwed when they have issues with their accounts.
There's 2 parts of contacting support. Sending your problem with your account and then getting a message that says "You need to buy something to verify you're the owner of this account." That's not paying 0$. What that is is paying more than 0$. Yes they don't always say that but it is VERY common when you have a problem with your account. How would you feel if you got hacked and you wanted your account back but not only is the person who hacked your account sending an anonymous message that says something like "Gimmie X amount of money and you can have your account back" but GH is too? This happened to me and i'm still triggered about it to this day. Not the hacking part but the "telling me to buy something to get help with my account" part. There is other ways to verify that i'm the owner of my account but why make it this one? It may be secure but it's taking stuff from me. Imagine if i got hacked and they said i need to buy something to verify i'm the owner of my account. How am i supposed to buy something when i cant even access my own account? I hope to god they at least have another method than this to deal with hacked accounts because that would give me so much relief.
The only way to verify through purchases is if you made a purchase while you had control of your account. If you're locked out of your account no amount of spending will "verify" your account if there's no record of you ever using said card.
Security questions would be the best way around this, but since we don't currently have those, the painless free way to do so is to send a ticket in and make a note of it. As long as you can verify the relative date and time of the interactions, along with the content of them, it is as useful for the support team as a card number.
While I would hate to be hacked, what I would hate more would be someone pretending to me be and locking me out of my own account without any genuine proof. Because of this, account security must be taken seriously.
My biggest question is "Why arent we doing this in the first place?" The questions idea is perfect but like why isn't it what we are doing now? Better yet why HAVEN'T we been doing it?
Purchases are an error-free way to ensure that you are the same person. Seeing as Spiral Knights doesn't require anything other than a username, a password, and an email address, the only other ways to know if you are who you say you are is through your interactions with the support staff, since that's on record. If you've had zero interactions with support staff via official channels, then purchases are the only other way to know for sure, since credit card numbers don't exactly change unless you switch from say, visa to mastercard. Even then you may still have an old card handy, or have records with values on it.
The other support teams you speak of had other tools to work with. Many other games have you set up security questions, require a date of birth, or in general collect a lot more information about you. Spiral Knights has never done this, instead opting for quickly making an account and getting into the game. It's great for setting up the game, but as you've discovered, not so great when you don't have access to your get out of jail free card (email).
The support team cannot ask you questions that they do not have the answers to. An email address is public domain, so even if you knew your email address but couldn't access it there wouldn't be much else they could do.
That all said and done, I'm sorry that the team couldn't get your account back to you. It is a security measure, so anything other than absolute proof to the record won't do.
