I decided to try out Spiral Spy for art practice as a sort of beginner. I placed it in the right directory (Steam's directory for Spiral Knights) but for some reason it keeps asking to be placed in the right one. I'm on a Mac, and using the Steam version of the game, also downloaded SpiralSpy 1.4/1.5

Thanks in advance to anyone who reads this, and more so to those who would help me out here.

Also, it's been 4 yeas since I've played, is the game still worth playing anymore?

Idk

There's some videos on YouTube that address this, but I don't know if they're outdated or not. Try your luck ._. Just search "spiral knights download spiral spy for mac" or something.

Oh hey, you're the person who draws fanart and has a sort of webcomic right? An honor to meet you! Nice to know that you're still up an about as well. Ok, I'll try that out and report my findings, thank you!

Insert usual silly subject here...

Yay, I actually know how Macs work, unlike myself 1 year ago!

If Youtube doesn't work out, I think I know what you need to do. I can't try this myself, but it hopefully should be enough anyway.

From Steam, I think you want to right click on the Spiral Knights and click "Properties." Look around in there; there should be a button for "Browse Local Files..." or something. (See this page; it's for something else, but it's in that picture.) This should open Finder and take to directly to Spiral Knights' install location.

The key, though, is to put Spiral Spy in the with a folder called `rsrc`. This is where all of Spiral Knights' model information is kept, so it's key that Spiral Spy can find it.

Therefor, if Steam's "Browse Local Files..." takes you to a folder without the rsrc folder, then look around. It won't work if you cannot find this folder.

About the rsrc, didn't work. Still telling me that it failed to launch or so.

Youtube didn't help

The Youtube videos didn't help, it pretty much just copy pasted the instructions from the website. I'm still stuck as to why it's not working, but if it's any value of information the popups I'm getting when I attempt to open SpiralSpy are "Please Put the Jar into the Spiral Knights Directory" and "The Java JAR file "spiralspy-1.4.jar" could not be launched. Check the Console for possible error messages."

So I'm truly stuck

Well, it's a real dead end for me over here. Absolutely nothing is working, it looks like SpiralSpy is way too outdated now since the game files are vastly different from what was described as per my research. Is there any alternative or like a continuation of the code via GitHub?

i had found an answer from a suggestion in the discord channel
use older java such as jre6
and write a bat file to specified the JAR file to use the particular old jre.

Is that so?

Is that so? Can you discuss that here
in detail? I'm not very technical so you're going to tell me how to write the .BAT file. As for the java, I'll get to work on that. Are you on a mac as well by the way? Will be looking forward to your post.

After over a year...

Hey there, Happy New Year!

I don't know if it is still appropriate to post a new comment on this since I'm testing a new and different method from my OP, but perhaps and update would be acceptable?

Anyways, since I last went on this goose chase I found that my mac had an application called Virtual Box. How I got it was probably due to the multiple versions of Java that I installed, of which one was a developer kit that I downloaded out of en-masse and frustration. Apparently, it is an operating system emulator by Oracle which I can use to emulate a virtual machine running Windows 10. I am aware of dual booting on mac, but since I don't know how to dual boot nor have I bought an official Windows 10 iso for the aforementioned method's use (I'm using the free downloadable ISO from the Microsoft website which would be unactivated without a key, personal use anyways right?). After a few months of light use and beginner learning, I can now at least launch an emulation of Windows 10 in a fashion similar to Parallels.

I downloaded the Spiral Knight client, ran it once to get the files stopping short of the character creation, downloaded and installed SpiralSpy into the proper directory, then ran it... It worked! Almost though, so this is where the new problem comes marching in.

The application actually opens, which is a step further from the last issue of not even opening at all. However, it is unable to generate the grid nor anything in the viewer on the left. Here's an image to better explain : https://imgur.com/a/RzCamhs . I believe this has something to do with virtual machines having virtual graphics cards based on related research on the topic, but I have no way of knowing for sure since I can't read the error text from SpiralSpy. I won't include it here but I can post that on request if need be.

Yet again, any help would be of great appreciation!
